RIP Jerry Sloan
« on: May 22, 2020, 10:59:53 AM »
So last Sunday, as we were watching the Jordan special, I insisted to my son that Jerry Sloan was dead.  Of course he does a little Wiki search to prove me wrong.

He dies five days later.

Just my luck as a father.

From now on I’m gonna try to stay on your good side.

Re Sloan, he was one of my favorites. He and Stormin’ Norman Van Lier weren’t the best backcourt in the NBA but they were the toughest.

RIP, Jerry.

Seeing Michael push Russel off one more time was too much for him.

Did the same thing. I for sure thought he passed away 2 or 3 years ago.

RIP to a great coach.

My wife and I were visiting my parents in Florida in 1990 when "Runaway" came on the radio.

I said: "Del Shannon ... I didn't think he was still alive."

Two days later, he died.

As for Sloan, maybe the best NBA coach ever to not win a title?

Maybe is. Don Nelson comes to mind too.

The guy who brought out the best of Wesley Matthews, when many thought Wesley was destined for Europe.

RIP Coach.

I think Nelson is #1, Sloan is probably #2.  Nelson has the most wins in NBA history and 3 time COY (tied for most all time with Pat Riley and Pop), also TONS of innovation that has carried through to the modern game.

And Nellie wore the fish ties! I still remember going to Saz's after a game and seeing Nellie there in his rumpled suit and loosened fish tie, with a huge plate of ribs and a beer.

This makes sense.

Helluva coach. I truly enjoyed watching those Bucks teams. Wish he would have won a title.

Loved watching Jerry Sloan as a player with the Bulls.  I think his defensive toughness and tenacity would have made him an outstanding player in any era. He was the definition of a hard nosed competitor who literally never left up for a second.
