Hard to pay people who can’t work.

Easier when you have a $700 million endowment.

Easier when you have a $700 million endowment.

The workers are keeping all of their benefits.

With enhanced unemployment their loss of wages will be minimal.

And endowments by definition can only be spent on specific things as indicated by the donors.  The university can't just give the money out whomever they please.

It would be fiscally irresponsible for Marquette not to furlough people who are literally unable to perform their jobs right now.
Have some patience, FFS.

Early adopters.

Sucks for people who are impacted, but that's what the bigger unemployment benefits are for.

The jobs will be waiting for them when this is over, and if they still have insurance, its not the end of the world.

MU has gotta manage its finances responsibly. Hard to take issue with this.

Refunding a half semester’s worth of room and board costs combined with other lost revenues and additional expenses related to the pandemic has resulted in an immediate short-term financial shortfall of approximately $15 million.

All furloughed employees will retain their current medical, dental and vision insurance, and Marquette will pay both the employer and employee portions of their insurance premiums during the temporary furloughs. In addition, tuition remission benefits, and vacation time and sick leave accruals will continue while employees are temporarily furloughed.

Sadly the right thing to do. But benefits continue, and as Ziggy mentioned - this means they can file for unemployment when it's most advantageous.

Any word on what areas these employees are coming from? I can speculate based on peripheral services I know are shut down.

If they can't do their work from home, you are probably talking about housekeeping, some building maintenance, administrative assistant types, etc.  I would guess 90% are hourly.

A good chunk will be coming from the Dental School.

What color is the sky in your world?

Depends on the day/weather/time of day from my perspective. I know there a scientific answer to that question, but I promise you my eyes sometimes see blue, sometimes white and blue, sometimes grey, sometimes almost black with some white dots.

speaking of "furloughs"  i don't believe any of the senior dental students were able to take their boards before the lockdown-that has got to be a nuclear bummer!!  many had their patients lines up and pooof!  i wonder how that's going to play into student loans, tuition, keeping their skills up etc.

remember, all of these young adults haven't been doing dentistry but for a couple of years.  a little different than riding a bike

there are going to be a lot of dental offices looking to fill some positions and were counting on many of these new grads.  gonna be a lot of "free agents" in an advantageous position.  general practice residencies with voids

True. Yet, there is a good chunk of staff that doesn't even deal with patient care.

Actually, board exams were completed March 7 & 8. So, that is out of the way, thankfully, for those who passed, hey?

Is it more comfortable to perform a root canal in boxers or briefs?
