Any guesses as to why .. MU is at $41m, DePaul $31m, Xavier $23m.

I mean .. TV revenue should be roughly the same .. NCAA units could differ between them .. then there's attendance revenue .. depends on the size and dollar value of the tickets.

Not sure how DePaul would be doing better than X in those last two categories.

Probably licensing revenue and inconsistencies about how it is counted and attributed to athletics.

Did some additional digging, and there are some interesting details between DePaul and Xavier...

There is a VAST disparity in revenues between men's basketball programs.  DePaul's men's basketball revenue for the year was $6,793,520; Xavier's was $13,916,975.  The other glaring disparity was in total revenues for women's teams.  DePaul made a whopping $8,816,349 from women's teams, and Xavier only made $1,994,842 for its women's teams.  Interestingly, DePaul has $12,725,727 listed as not being allocated by a gender/sport.

I think that accounts for the differences.  Without looking, I'm willing to bet that DePaul is in the top-grouping of BE programs on women's spending/expenses.  They are easily at the bottom of men's basketball spending.

I don't get it, our revenue = expenses for the athletic department?

My guess is that there are certain services that MU provides (academic advising for instance), and that athletics underwrites as much of that as it can.

Not Sure Why the differences in Big East Revenue Versus the other schools in the Big East either. My Wife and I graduated from MU. But our Daughter graduated from X. We contribute to both X and MU. Our Son currently goes to MU.

1. Marquette’s Men’s Basketball Ticket Prices are about double X’s.
2. DePaul gets more revenue from women’s team’s than most.
3. The Schools different sports. Might be a reason.

Also Cost of Living in the cities might have an affect too.

Counsel stops in Xavier often the school is incredibly connected.
My Daughter got in Villanova and UW Madison and could of went almost anywhere but picked X. She has a huge following. She is incredibly Successful and happy there. You have to go where you are happy.

My daughter is a Freshman there and loves it.  (Very unhappy the spring semester was cut short.)

A lot has changed in 2 years also.  Since my first visit in 2018 X bought up the neighborhood and built the HUB (Health United Building) and has new upperclassman apartments being built.  My daughter thinks they are eyeing to purchase a strip mall next to the Cintas Center next.

Guessing there was a transfer of excess to the university listed under an expense.

OK gang, here is the issue with NCAA accounting for tax purposes: There is no Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) covering how revenue and expenses are reported.

Some stuff is obvious: ticket revenue, for example. But does sale of merchandise belong in the athletic department or in general university revenue? That is a judgment call. Same for television revenue, concessions, ancillary sales, parking, tailgating fees etc.

My aforementioned theory that expenses for Marquette include transfers to the general fund (generally considered dividends under GAAP), would be allowable as an expense in a standard-free reporting environment.

Until the IRS or the NCAA comes up with CAAP (College Athletics Accounting Principals) and sanctions anyone who mis-states financial data, the comparisons between colleges are ridiculous.

One could have said the same thing about Marquette the year we won the National Championship!

College is what you make of it, period.
