It may seem like a longshot after this 1-5 stretch, but Markus has been the best player in the conference by far, in both advanced and box score stats. Not sure if it will be enough to get a majority to overlook the team aspect, but I made the case anyway.

Nice analysis, though defense is disregarded.  It is a convincing case, but to the winner goes the spoils.  If we were close to the top team like last year, they would give to him for sure.  They're not going to and because we aren't very good, I can understand it.

During the 1961-62 season, Wilt Chamberlain averaged an NBA record 50.4 ppg and 27.2 rpg for the Philadelphia Warriors. Along the way, he played more than 48 minutes a night. Oh yeah, and he scored 100 points in a game.

It's fair to say Wilt had the most dominant individual season in NBA history, maybe even in the history of team sports. But the MVP went to Bill Russell. Although Russell averaged 30(!) fewer points a game, his Celtics team won a league-best 60 games -- 11 ahead of Philly -- and went on to win its 4th straight NBA championship.

Fair or not, team success matters to the voters.

Zagoria is such a biased East Coast homer.  He's good with recruiting stuff, but I steer clear of his opinions otherwise.

Since their loss to Providence, in the home stretch to win the conference, Powell has averaged 19 on 42% eFG, 16 on 37% if you factor out the explosion early on against Marquette.  Just terrible

Mamu has averaged 19.5 on 77.3% eFG and 9 boards.  Thats obscene, Powell hasn't even been the best player on his team since Mamu came back to full strength.

But it wont matter. Powell was terrible last night and even Raff was constantly raving about what a winner he was.  Ive basically given up on Howard winning it, but I hope Alexander puts Powell in a straightjacket on Saturday and gets a share of the title for Creighton and wins it himself.

Yeah there's no pictures of cancer so PRN feels like he was right all along!
Retire Terry Rand's jersey!

The fake media is a bunch of Powell rumpswabs. They would have given the award on senior night if they could.

Your Markus hate is in overdrive. Markus' stats are head and shoulders above Powell's. Markus is the better player.  Its a POY award, not MVP.

I agree with PRN here.  The POY *is* the Big East's version of the MVP.  We won't finish better than .500 in conference and have once again collapsed at the end of the year.  They already gave Markus the award last year when the team's record was significantly better.  He won't win it this year.  If he does, I don't think he deserves it.

Ok then if it's "MVP", Powell still shouldn't win. SH has multiple quality wins without Powell and nearly went 4-0 over their last 4, including almost beating a top 15 team, with Powell being relatively awful and Mamu being SH's best player. Without Markus, Marquette likely competes with SJ and DePaul for the bottom of the league. Alexander is far more valuable to Creighton on both sides of the ball as well.

I didn't say I thought Powell should win.

So, who's the guy?

I'd go with Alexander.  He's averaging 17 and 5 for a team that might end the year in the top 10 if they beat SH.  Markus has put up big numbers, but since he already won it and we won't even finish above .500 in conference, I think someone else will get it.

Look, in terms of slurpiness, I understand the value of Markus winning BEPOY.  Wojo needs *something* to hang his hat on for this season, and the program will want something to brag about.  But I really don't give a damn if Markus wins it.  It won't make me feel better about the mediocre season we've had.

Alexander is best two way player in league and surefire all-conference member but he's not an elite player. What likely will happen is two guys who would vote for Howard will vote for Alexander (especially if Jays win) and Powell will win it with five votes.

This, at least for me, has nothing to do with Wojo. The numbers show Markus is the best player.

In the preseason poll, Powell won this even though Markus was returning. Why? The coaches picked the Hall to win. What's changed?

I would argue Powell's numbers went down, while Markus' went up. I understand Powell will probable win, and I can't change that, but it's therapeutic to get it out.

Powell has been pretty bad. He will still probably win it, though.

He was so so last year too but still got and gets the buzz. Fox Sports is all over the NYC narrative on Powell. My point is, the BE coaches pick, not anyone else or any data point. It's pretty telling that they picked Powell over Markus preseason. It's also pretty telling who their team preference is, and Hall and Marquette are doing as they predicted in the season.

Stats say Markus. Media says Powell. What has transpired for the coaches to change their preseason pick? Markus is still statistically better than Powell as he was coming into the season.

Btw, as I said before, my pick would be Alexander. He excels on both ends. And Creighton has overperformed.

Mamu and McKnight are both better than Powell. Hard to see how you win BEPOY when you are the third best player on your team.

JWags85

5 straight games of 30+ shooting 50% from 3 and 4 assists in each.  He's been absolutely unreal and it hasn't mattered. Kid really deserves better.

PGsHeroes32

Markus deserves a plague simply for having to put up with this trash.

Sure he has some issues..Poor handle, driving into traffic in big moments(DePaul) when you know the call isnt come and never really clutch.

But there is only so much the kid can do. When he tries not to chuck. We are lucky if we even get a shot off, much less make it. Hes our only prayer.

Real shame. I hope we go into the final 2 games(not looking likely to play anymore than that) with a simple strategy of letting him bomb away. I'd rather see our best scorer ever have a chance to author his own fate than continually see McEwen and Co burn his fate alive.
Lazar picking up where the BIG 3 left off....

And he hasn't chucked in awhile either. He's been efficient with his shooting. Just has no help
