I realize that they haven't released the NET formula, and probably won't, but help me out here.  Comparing us to BYU, who is 1 spot ahead of us.  Q1 advantage us, 5-5 versus 1-5.  Q2 advantage us, 5-1 vs 4-2.  Both undefeated in Q3 and Q4 games.  SOS advantage us 20 vs 32.  The only way that I can see that they're superior to us is in quality of Q4 games; they've played 7 to our 5, but their worst is 270, while we have a 310 and a 312.  Is that really enough to overcome the additional 4 Q1 wins that we have?

The NET is more than just wins and losses.  It takes into account O and D efficiency, adjusted win percentage based on home/away, point spread up to 10 pts, and details within those categories.   So the resume and quad records are the product of the NET, not the other way around.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the explanation, we have had some ugly Q1 losses, although one would think that twice as many Q1/Q2 wins would overcome that, guess not.  I think there is a good chance that we pass them regardless as they only have one more Q1 game on the schedule , which should be a loss to Gonzaga, while we only have 1 non-Q1 game left.  Going .500 (or better, can't go .500 in a 7 game stretch) in our remaining Q1 games, plus winning our lone Q2 game remaining should put us in the top 20, assuming no blowout losses.

BYU Average Winning Margin: 17.4 ppg
BYU Average Losing Margin: 8.3 ppg

Marquette Average Winning Margin: 15.6 ppg
Marquette Average Losing Margin: 12.2 ppg

With SOS, if we perform similarly from a results perspective we'll pass them, but with similar SOS & records, those margins are significant.

And while BYU is ahead of us in NET and KenPom, bracketmatrix has them as top 9 seed while we are the top 7 seed. Obviously, bracketoligists don't choose the field, but even though they have the better cpu numbers, they likely get seeded below us

Exactly.  The NET rating isn't the S curve.  It is the starting point.  They will look at those Q1 wins and losses as some are better than the others.  That is why our schedule being so strong and the ability to pick up wins over Butler, SHU and Creighton will greatly strengthen our seeding vs the S Curve.

Its DJOver

Just to be clear, I wasn't really that worried about seeding/bracketology, I was just trying to get a better understanding of NET, and was kind of amazed that a team with 1 Q1 win could be ranked so high.  I know that there are other numbers being crunched in the equation but they had the fewest Q1 wins out of anyone in the top 25.

Purdue will finish with at least 6-7 more losses and the tie breaker to Marquette. There is no way they will finish ahead. Also keep in mind that Marquette players Butler, Creighton and Seton Hall at home. If they win two of those 3 they are going to be in the top 15 in NR.

Last week Purdue iffy to make the tournament.....they seem safely in at the moment.  29th in Net Rankings before today's road win vs IU.

A little surprised we dropped, as our non-con opponents went 7-2 yesterday.

USC blowing it was not good

I watched some of that and they really just gave it away. They couldn't handle ASU's defensive pressure and had no offensive rhythm.

The Pac-12 had a better non-con this year, but other than Oregon and maybe Colorado, I'm not sold anyone in that league is very good.

Once MU becomes a lock, my focus is on getting as many schools from the Big East in the tournament. Helps financially and aids in recruiting.

I agree with your assessment on the Pac-12.  Arizona is not that strong, but they have a high NET ranking and The Johnnies beat them on a neutral , which indirectly helps everyone in our league.

This is an interesting report the NCAA puts out. Gives a good perspective on where MU ranks among the various factors.

One big feature of the Big East is the sheer number of Quad 1 games our league as a whole has is very helpful. Big 12 and Big 10 also have a lot of Quad 1 exposure. That is helpful when evaluating team sheets.
