What are you listening to? Podcasts
« on: November 01, 2019, 11:32:18 AM »
We have a what are you watching thread.  Figured I'd start a what are you listening to?  Mainly for podcasts as we've had other threads about music, but I suppose music could be in here too.

Podcasts that I've listened to for a couple years and still subscribe to:
Pardon My Take
CBS Sports Eye on College Basketball
The Lowe Post
Scrambled Eggs
Real Chilly Podcast
One Shining Podcast
30 for 30 Podcasts
The Sideline with Evan Daniels

New listens for me:
Serial - Heard season 1 was great and that season 2 started slow so people quit on it.  I gave season 1 a listen, thought it was just okay.  Didn't start season 2.
Up and Vanquished - heard a random episode of it on a car ride with my brother and his wife.  Find it more interesting than Serial so far, just started it though.
Atlanta Monster - haven't started it yet, but produced by the same guy that does Up and Vanquished
Rocket Trigger Warning (wild that saying this would trigger anyone, but it's the world we live in): Black Lives Matter

I listen to a lot of podcasts with quite a bit of variety.  Here are a few that are currently in my rotation:

  • Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend - longish interviews by O'Brien and other celebs (typically in comedy)
  • The Way I Heard It* - think Paul Harvey, "The Rest of the Story."  Mike Rowe is a freaking national treasure.
  • Ball and Chain - Steve Rushin and Rebecca Lobo; really just a discussion of married life and raising kids; for some reason I enjoy it, but suspect that most people wouldn't
  • Ear Hustle - recorded in San Quentin prison about life in prison
  • Hey Do You Remember - cheesy podcast re-watching and discussing 80s/90s movies
  • TED Radio Hour
  • The Good Place Podcast - if you like the show, you'll probably like this; also interesting because it gives some good insights into how episodic television gets made

And there are many, many more that have come and gone over the last few years.

*Yesterday, for Halloween, Rowe did a reading of The Tell-Tale Heart.  It was outstanding.  Totally not representative of what is usually on The Way I Heard It, but really good.

The City, Season 2

My first podcast (that I've subscribed) ever.
Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

I like true crime, business, philosophy, learning, and have a guilty pleasure.

Serial
Cold
Dr Death
In the Dark
Broken Hearts
Happy Face
Household Names
The Pitch
Business Wars
Freakanomics
TED
SYSK
Radiolab
Philosophize This
On Being
Invisibilia
Making Sense
Revisionist History
Broken Record
Against The Rules

I love Bob Schneider, one of my favorite musicians and songwriters. His podcast is I’m OK, You’re OK, I’m Not OK, You’re Not OK. It’s funny, cringeworthy, deep and shallow all in thirty minutes.

Another I recently enjoyed was A Very Fatal Murder.  It's done by The Onion, and it's skewering the true crime genre (which I really enjoy).  There were quite a few times I truly and literally did "LOL."  It drags here and there, but overall, I really enjoyed it.  Also, it's not too long (probably not much more than 90 minutes total), so it's easy to blow through the whole thing pretty quickly.

Also, don't skip the commercials.  The one for USPS in the final episode nearly caused a spit-take.

The 30 for 30 series on Donald Sterling was well done and eye opening.

If you were a diehard Office, Jenna Fisher (Pam) and Angela Kinsey (Angela) are on the third season episode of their new podcast, Office Girls. They are breaking down every episode from the show one by one.

This here's a good thread.

Request for recommendations: I was late to the game on Dan Carlin's Hardcore History, which was great because there was so much to binge. But I've worked my way through those with embarassing speed. What should I turn to now?

Hardcore history
Revisionist history
Joe Rogan experience - I was astounded at how good of a casual interviewer Joe is. Compared to his jock/outlandish persona at ringside/doing standup

I'll definitely look into that office podcast - thanks!

Anyone have suggestions on good podcast platforms? Currently using Google music - it's "eh"

Joe Rogan

I really like Rogan's podcast.  I used to listen to it a lot more, but he's so damn prolific I stopped subscribing -- he kept filling up my queue.  On a fairly regular basis  I skim through his recent episodes and listen to any that sound interesting.

Although Rogan is probably my favorite of the long-form interviewers I've also enjoyed Penn Jillette, Marc Maron, Chris Hardwick and Pete Holmes.  I generally treat them the same as Rogan -- not subscribed, but revisit them to see if they talked to anyone interesting.

Am I the only one who listens to podcasts on 2x speed?

There are some podcasts that I listen at normal speed -- primarily fiction where there is an actual performance going on -- but I listen to almost everything sped up.  I've grown so accustomed to 2x that even dropping down to 1.5x makes it seem "normal" to me (for those that tend to be a little too fast at 2x).

A separate post about fiction podcasts.  They're hit and miss.  I must admit that I get really annoyed when I'm several hours into a fiction podcast and start to lose interest but feel invested and determined to finish.  But that's happened several times.

My favorites were probably Homecoming and Limetown.

Others that I've listened to that come to mind are The Black Tapes; The Walk; We're Alive; Steal the Stars; Alice Isn't Dead; Sandra.  I recently listened to one called Blackout that had an interesting premise and great cast (including Rami Malek), but could not believe they didn't make a second season.  I couldn't help but wonder if Malek's Oscar made him less interested in continuing with a podcast.

Does anyone else do fiction?  Any recommendations?

Another one I forgot to mention before:  13 Minutes to the Moon

This was an outstanding podcast produced by the BBC about the moon landing.  I recommend it very highly.

Sorry to spam the thread.  I'll go away now.

I still listen at regular speed. 1.5 feels fast, though I adapt to it. I find that I really don't like the increased speed for things that make me laugh. 2x seems crazy. I wish there was a 1.25x option, because I do find the value in increasing the speed, but even 1.5 doesn't really allow any time for the hosts to breathe.

use pocketcasts as your pod catcher. you can listen at .1x increments. i listen at 1.4x but it allows you get used to speeds.

I use pocketcasts too.  For purely talk stuff I generally default to 2x, but I do like that if something is going a little quick I can drop it down at .1x increments until it is comfortable.  I usually don't go below 1.5x unless it's something that, for some reason, I like listening to at normal speed.

EconTalk

Usually a great podcast (though recently I haven't really had an opportunity to listen to it).  Russ Roberts, retired economics professor from George Mason University, is the host.  He's a bit too libertarian for my taste, but nonetheless, he's a great host, who is fair, and tries to be objective.  He often has guests from various subfields of economics and various political stripes.  For example, he had Glen Weyl on there somewhat recently, an economist who has certain policy prescriptions that Libertarians would find anathema.

The guests aren't limited to economics.  He also has guests from the blogosphere, policy circles, and entrepreneurs, e.g., the creators of LinkedIn.  I first learned about Bitcoin and Uber on his podcast.

Not podcasts, but I watch everything at 1.7x .. This is a fantastic extension for chrome .. nearly all video can be sped up:

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/video-speed-controller/nffaoalbilbmmfgbnbgppjihopabppdk?hl=en

It also can skip +10 seconds with a keystroke, which is fantastic for all adverts.

I forgot one that I have been enjoying--

Friendly Fire - once a week, 3 guys watch a war movie and discuss it.  Good mix of history, warfare and movie knowledge on the panel, and the 3 of them have good chemistry.  They tell you in the show (and notes) what the next movie will be, so you can watch in advance (of course, you always can with a podcast, so...).  They have 200 plus movies on the list, and randomly select the next one at the end of the pod (except when they will opt out if the random selection is the third in a row from the same war).  Not all are traditionally considered war movies.

So, anything from Lebanon, Zero Dark Thirty, The Mouse That Roared, Hacksaw Ridge, The African Queen, Dr. Strangelove, Glory , Force 10 from Naverone, Dirty Dozen, Enemy at the Gates, Stalag 17 to Master and Commander etc

Binged through the first season of Exeter over the last couple days driving for work.  A pretty good fiction podcast.
