Was very pleased to see that Rick will be inducted in the Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame this year. Wonderful honor and well deserved. Congrats, Coach!!

Truly one of a kind. Remarkable mind for hoops. When you look up "gym rat" in Merriam-Webster, Rick's picture turns up in the definition.

As a young guy, I loved Rick's weekly radio talks about recruiting in general and specifically the kids he was after.

Well deserved.

That being said, is it actually possible to congratulate a dead person?
Have some patience, FFS.

Good question. Both my folks are gone and I talk to them every day, guess the way I am wired. People may be physically gone in my life, but still part of my daily life.

Maybe one of the most brilliant tacticians in the game. Analyzed and reacted to every detail.

Anti-Dentite

Well deserved, Rick was a national treasure.

I find it amusing that to finally become good and win a NCAA tourney game, SLU had to hire a Marquette grad, considering how bitter they are at MU after the CUSA split

Stand up guy.  Terrific coach.  Well deserved.  Congrats to Rick and the Majerus family.

I agree with this analysis.

Well Chaifetz's money man came from MU so there's that.

Great coach; even better heart!!!

Was definitely one of a kind
Too bad it did not work out for him at MU.
But he definitely had some big years later. Will never forget that Indiana game where we only had 4 or was it 3 guys on the floor to finish the game, and Knight congratulated the players and Rick at end of game. Been looking for My life on a Napkin book for about 10 years now, but somebody stole it

DoggyDaddy

I first ran into Rick Majerus when he was the freshman BB coach at Marquette High. I didn't play buckets so I thought he was a weight-challenged upper classman at the time. But he was approachable to all and he often had lunch in the cafeteria with the students. During his brief stay at MUHS, he developed the players that won a championship or two for MUHS a few years later. Those teams included guys like Jeff Jonas, Gary Rosenbuger, and Bill Neary. The latter two helped Al win the 1977 MU championship. Jonas on the other hand, was a star at the University of Utah and later instrumental in getting Rick to move out there and come so very close to winning one for the Utes.
Rick had knack for seeing and developing talent, telling great stories, and supporting the best eateries. We We all credit Al for those years of greatness and that wonderfull 1977 finish. But Al knew--we all knew--it would not have been without Hand Raymonds and Rick Majerus at his side.

Congratulations, Rick. Played with and against Rick in the Old Gym - can't believe how long ago that was.

I played in a lot of those games. Rick would set up at the top of the key and direct the action—setting immovable picks. I probably payed with and against you.

Mr. Sand-Knit

Always felt it was such a shame Rick never made it back to MU to coach again.  Not only would we have been elite with him coaching but he was the embodiment of MU and him being anywhere else just did not feel right.

I'm still pissed he only gave me an A/B in Philosophy of Basketball.

Seriously, I always liked spending time with him. Few were more quotable than he was, and that's golden to a writer.

And I'm still pissed that Marquette used this asinine grading system.
