Looking at the MU Homecoming Schedule of events, I noticed that the schedule for Madness seems different from years past.

On Friday night
...at 7pm is the 5k Run/Walk
...at 9pm is Marquette Madness

The description for Madness says that "this year's event is geared towards Marquette students."

On Saturday
...from 9-1 is an open practice for men's and women's teams
...a meet and greet during the block party

Just curious if anyone knows more about these changes?  My wife and I have gone to Madness every year since we graduated, but we will have a 2 month old in October.  If Madness was like past years, she would be fine.  Since the event starts later and sounds rowdier, I'm not sure if bringing the baby is a good idea.

Congratulations on the baby. Go to the block party and do photo ops with the baby and the players . It will be fun.

Madness has been tired the last few years and good that they are making a change.

As pointed out on top, that Saturday, Men's Basketball Open Practice will take place at 9:30 to 11:45 a.m.
The practice is open to the public.

Wife and I were wondering the same thing. Does "geared toward" mean exclusive to? Priority given?

Marcus92

I could see a few reasons for gearing Marquette Madness more toward students. First, to get students more fired up about the team and the season. We need a great student section for every home game at the new arena. Second, for the players -- especially newcomers like Joey, Ed and Joseph. And third, for recruits. A high-energy environment makes a bigger impression.

I would be happy if it was all students if they would stay for the entire event and be loud.... I'm fine with that.   They need to ramp it up and make it a real madness.  Go Marquette!

Glow, to the hole with authority - opens the wallet and buys the naming rights for the Glow Blue & Gold 5k Run/Walk!

I like the concert idea, and holding the open practice independent, the next day.  Huge improvement!

I haven't heard who the concert performer is yet but I agree with the changes that MU has made to Madness.  It had gotten stale.  Too bad that ballplayer who went to Arizona decided not to come.

We probably won't make it in time because of prior commitments but I encourage all you guys to hit the Saturday practice.  We've been to one at the BMO BC before and Wojo and the team do a very nice job.  Coach spends the time miked up and talking to the fans about what they are working on, etc.  It's quite fun.

Edit (after thinking):  While I take zero credit for the actual decision, our '83 Reunion Committee (mostly me) was insistent that holding the Friday night class reunion parties during Madness was a huge mistake and that changes were necessary following the experience of Reunion/Homecoming in the new format last year.  Those conversations (and meeting notes at MU) go back to our kick off meeting last November/December.  I wonder if others said the same thing?  I wonder if my not so subtle 'we've got to fix this' had any impact?  Frankly, we haven't discussed the topic in many months.  MU actually holds these cards pretty close to the vest so I might never know for sure.  Anyways, a solid improvement for sure.  We ARE!

Is it cool to bring babies or what??

No 79, AAR is playing Saturday night in Central Mall.  What's being discussed is another concert for the students inside the Al after madness.  MU is doing TWO national act shows that weekend.

We R Final Four

So is this the open practice for season ticket holders.......even though it's open to the public? Guess I would be surprised if there is a second open practice exclusively for season ticket holders.

Yikes. Between All-American Rejects and B.O.B. that would have been a great duo in 2012. Neither are really relevant anymore, but still a cool idea.

It's another fine signing by MU.

And to cheebs' comment, guys just like you complained regularly that I couldn't book Bruce back in the day.   :o

Is this confirmed? I didn't find anything when I searched for it.

Well, I did find some obituaries and ads for guys name Bob Marquette, but that wasn't very helpful.

While not the biggest hits now, these students grew up listening to them. If tickets are reasonably priced they'll pack the place.
