Exactly, when you go from a legacy WI name (M&I) to a names that stands for Bank of Montreal, you need to build up good will.  IMO, between that and the stage at Summerfest I think they accomplished that.

I am not in marketing, nor did I study it, but I suspect the strategy is not that direct. They are trying to build brand awareness, slowly seeping into the minds of people as they encounter the brand over months and years. So when it is time to take out a mortgage or open a bank account, people will think of BMO Harris as one of several well-known, trusted options.

Yep.  BMO Harris has worked hard to be a good corporate citizen with a 'local' image.

To be fair, Harris Bank was a long time Chicago bank with a presence around the midwest (although not Wisconsin I believe, that was the M&I piece), that was also acquired by BMO. The Harris brand still has a lot of equity with Chicago folks. So it makes sense they would invest in Milwaukee, where the brand was completely new.

That may be the strategy. To me, it still seems like a lot of money just to be seen as one of the crowd in the local banking world.

Do we actually know it was a lot of money?  It is my understanding that the financial terms weren't disclosed.

Fiserv generated nearly $6 billion in revenue for 2017. Their expenses included more than a billion dollars for "Selling, general and administrative." This sponsorship is just one piece of a very big pie.

The term was announced at 20 years.  Dollars haven't been announced, but it's gotta be in the $100 million range.

It's 25 years.

And it doesn't "gotta" be anything.  The Bucks were pretty desperate after and I am sure Fiserv's deal was a fraction of what the Bucks were originally asking.

Have some patience, FFS.

You're right about the years, I was going from memory.

They were originally asking $10 Mil per year.  That would put this deal at $250,000,000 so yeah, I'd consider $100 Mil a fraction of that.

And over 25 years, that is a rounding error for a company that will probably earn at least half a trillion dollars in that same amount of time (assuming modest annual growth).

I don’t know the number, but I have read plenty about how the Bucks negotiate and I have seen where ticket prices are going.

So yeah, we know it was a lot of money.

They were running out of time and needed to save face.

My guess is that the Bucks were like the car salesman who lets you walk out of the dealership rather than agree to your price, and then calls you the next day begging you to come back and buy the car at your original offer.

Question: Did anyone here open a bank account at BMO Harris Bank due to the sponsorship?

Funny...I honestly never even knew that BMO Harris was a bank.  We don't have them here, and I was never curious enough to look into it when I heard the reference to the Bradley Center's "full" name.

I feel like that's been a common theme with the new Bucks ownership.

I would say from a business and community standpoint they’ve been solid. Minus some comments about segregation and the Live Block building downsizing a bit it seems like they’ve been knocking that side out of the park.

I would agree with you on the basketball side though. Hopefully a competent coach influencing the front office evens that out a bit.

I'm liking the new Bucks banners.  Wonder if MU will do something similar?

I’ve thought for some time now that sports teams aren’t capitalizing with technology on banners. Rather than a material banner, have an LED board up there, for 90% of the time keep it static “World Champions”, but during intro’s or some other moment, highlight that championship team or retired number with video or cool graphics. Always thought seemed like a missed opportunity.

The Marquette banners are all new. They will hang on the northside of the arena.

Will they retire the actual Scoopers or just their jerseys?

They will retire the accounts. Hilltopper will honor them with live retirement in the Forum (aka perma-ban) using his personal phone for all to see.

Assuming he makes it in the kiss cam, otherwise you may have to squint to see.
