No regional with a new stadium?

Someone mentioned that Marquette is not interested in hosting a regional.  Less games = less revenue.

How much does the host school get?

bilsu

Is the new arena big enough to host regional games?

Ardmore Mug

Yes bilsu, it is big enuf and Wadesworld is also correct.  MU wants a bigger bang for its buck and ll the work it takes, the 1st weekend will have 8 teams and 4 days of games.  more $$$ spent.

Well I would think has to do more with the bid amount. Regionals you need to bid more, more money up front, less games, and more risk.

So why does any city bid on the regionals then?  KC, Memphis, Indy, Louisville, etc. have all hosted regionals in recent years. Omaha next year, along with much larger cities.  Sounds like rounds 1/2 are much better deal for the host.

My guess (and that's all this is) is that opening rounds are better for money, regionals are better for marketing. You get more media at a regional and more of a focus on the individual cities.

And maybe you can only host each every X amount of years, but both will bring in money so some schools/cities decide it's worth it to host both regionals and first and second rounds while others (Marquette, apparently) decide it's not worth the hassle to host a regional but it is to host the 1st and 2nd round?  I have no idea though.

That much is clear. We're trying to understand why.

This has been explained several times, but the answer is $$$$$.

There might be more cachet in hosting a regional, but the first round sites have 8 teams and 6 games, whereas the regional sites get 4 teams and only 3 games.  First rounders sell more tickets, more concessions, and more swag than regionals.  It also helps locally, as 8 teams means more out of town travellers spending money on hotels, food, shopping, etc.

MU and Milwaukee have also gotten pretty good at running an NCAA opening weekend and the NCAA seems to more than happy with hosting in Milwaukee.

So to take this to its logical conclusion, suppose Milwaukee had the hotel rooms to support a Final Four.  I don't think we do at the moment, but indulge me.   The powers that be have reason to believe a bid would be seriously considered.

That's only four teams and three games.  Bid?  Or not?

Green Bay.

To hell with the battleships and carriers. It's time to play at the frozen tundra.

Everyone would call or the frozen four. Too much potential for brand confusion

Yeah, you're right. I guess it might be possible to co-opt Miller Park for this purpose if MLB would work around it, but you're right.

Point being, absent some unknown parameter(s), certain cities are opting for less tourism revenue by bidding on - and winning - regional finals.  To me, that's an odd decision.

Just have the hockey and basketball back to back. Or better yet. Basketball on ice. You heat up the ice cubes. Hot ice.
