Big East Tournament Thread
« on: March 08, 2017, 02:06:19 PM »
I thought we might as well have a thread for all BET games, with it kicking off tonight.

It looks like they removed the NBA three point line from the court for the tournament, which was something that I was irrationally worried about

No, you're right...we are a 3 team and don't need that distraction. Glad they are getting rid of it.

(We also don't want Marcus to get the itch after he hits his 4th 3 from beyond the other arc :) )

Thankfully we're still another full season away from him being eligible to do something about that itch.
I would take the Rick SLU program right now.

Would like to see The Johnnies beat down the The Hoyas. Mullin is building a program with a future and JT3 is like an anchor in the sand for Georgetown. Also having the hometown team in the next round boost the excitement  level for the tournament.

We need Gtown to win to avoid falling below 100 in RPI.

Yikes, I can't believe the GT-SJU game would be that important for our RPI>

What are the outcomes?

If Georgetown loses, they fall below the top-100. That means another sub-100 loss and one less top-100 win. For SJU to reach the top-100, they have to win the entire tournament, so it's highly unlikely they could win enough to offset the damage of the GT loss.

I agree with your disdain of JT3 and Georgetown. I also am intrigued by Mullin and St. John's. But Georgetown winning would be much better for Marquette.

You weren't the only one. I'm convinced it makes teams shoot worse from deep.

I have little faith that Georgetown wins. It looks like they have given up on JT III at this point. I think St. John's rolls them.

Who do you think would be a good hire for GT? Anyone think Lavin would take it?

It looks like as long as Big John is alive, JT III is safe.

Maybe the guy from Indiana. But I heard he sucks.

Some enterprising Georgetown fan just needs to "Celtic Pride" Big John.

It's not.  We split with both teams and whether one of those teams ends up just inside or just outside a particular arbitrary grouping in one isolated metric will not materially impact our overall profile.  Personally I'm just glad we should be safely in the field and have a great opportunity against a very solid Seton Hall team.

Archie Miller would be a home run, but unlikely he takes that over his alma mater of NC State. Will Wade, Kevin Keatts, and LeVelle Moton likely get mentioned.

In the short term, I think Crean would be a good fit, but think he'd get their fanbase frustrated after a few years as they might have IU like expectations. Lavin I can't see. Good enough recruiter, but marginal on court results, and haven't they had enough of that?

One name that might pop up this year is Mick Cronin. He's been complaining a lot about seeding and AAC treatment. Might be pull a Buzz and seek greener pastures despite success? They are close, and right now the Big East looks pretty stable.

I can't see a known coach with upside going to Georgetown if they get rid of JT3 against his will.  That would be a nightmare.

Agree completely. Who the hell would want to be in the middle of that fight.

Right now, it's a bad job. GT is in quite the dilemma.

In thinking about this, I think the only thing that could make this work is if they hire a alum.

Someone like Patrick Ewing, who has been an NBA assistant for over a decade.

Maybe they should rival our guards with all centers.  Ewing, Mourning & Mutumbo roaming the sideline.

JT3 and Mullin nearly coming to blows.    Big East, baby.   Carnesecca and Big John, Rollie are all smiling.    Devendorf just jumped up yelling in his trailer.

That could be really the only option if JT III is forced out. But, would an alum go directly against the wishes of Big John?

The one advantage would be the opportunity to rally the basketball alumni to their side.

Still a potential mess.

When's the last time you've seen a basketball coach do that? '85?

The thought is that someone like Ewing would be amenable to the Thompson family.  His son is on staff already as the Director of Basketball Operations.
