fairly long article on how the hoop scientists are trying to keep up with the ever changing dynamics of the competition of NCAA hoops.  a lot of stuff to digest here that i'm sure will never get rid of the annual controversies surrounding the process.  but that's part of what makes march mad, ey?

Fivethirtyeight is good when it comes to things like this. Ultimately, any devaluation of RPI will be a good thing for Marquette. But if you ask the committee about our performance going forward,  I'd imagine it looks much the same as our past - that we might be trending up,  but these wins could be random fluctuations.

Long story short,  we need to prove over the rest of the season that we ARE trending upward. Once we get to the committee, Pomeroy will be our best friend

Indifferent. Some years we will be appropriate for previous criteria, some for new.

Won't matter anyway, because everyone else will shutter their bball programs after Wojo wins 20 national championships in a row.

BTW, I believe the word you are looking for is "tweaking".

"Tweeking" means something else entirely, although if the selection committee does it, it might help our chances.

In European/World soccer, can't believe I'm saying this, good teams move up in divisions or leagues and not so good teams move down.

The solution is not adding to the confusion with more metrics, the problem is that there is too much data. 

I know it would take the suspense out of it, good T.V., controversy, and would make conference games more important. 

The issue is that the 3rd or 4th team from this conference or that would be upset, but they are now, they are the bubble teams.   Set a standard and it eliminates the so-called bubble teams.  Take the top 3 teams if you want, what's the difference?  Just make it a rule and send the selection committee packing.

My sentiments exactly.

Back then, if you didn't win your conference regular season, you didn't go unless you were in the ACC. Many conferences, like the SEC, didn't send their runner-ups to the NIT either.

The at-large selections were for major independents, of which there were a lot more than today. We competed against Notre Dame, Dayton, DePaul, Creighton, Detroit, Loyola of Chicago, Butler and a host of teams I can't remember for two slots. And, there were very few instances where you were moved out of your region. It was the NCAA's (read, Adolph "The Bigot" Rupp's) decision in 1970 to move us from the Mideast Regional to the Midwest Regional that triggered Al's tirade and decision to go to the NIT. It still is the only known spurning of an NCAA invite.

And once in the NCAA, we had to play an extra game against a mid-major conference champion because we were independent.

Of course the committee will be tweeking.  How else do people think the bracket gets put together?  Handing out bids, seeding, geographic placement, matchup rules, interesting matchups...all done in a week.  Try putting that together without tweeking!

Good point, but some of the  losses could also be random outliers, who knows?

Thinking back to my collegiate days, I would think that students tweeking late on selection Sunday would be a sign that MU made the NCAA.

Responding to, 1968 missed you.  Also playing on words, vague and vogue, Vogue was a cocktail lounge directly across Wisconsin from the library, next door was Real Chili. 

Still curious about how the selection process weights leagues and teams.  Seems very political and mysterious to me. 

About the service, your welcome, but I  got a lot more our of 25 years of government service than they got out of me.   I  don't know where the "thank you for your service" came from, I  keep mine for visits to the wall in D.C..
