QuoteThe scoreboard will be the "largest of its kind in the league," team president Peter Feigin said at a news conference announcing the Bucks partnership with Daktronics, a South Dakota company that will create the digital displays inside and outside the new arena.

The scoreboard will allow fans to see replays and ads and engage with each other on social media, Feigin said, adding that it will have "a little bit of the ability to surprise and delight." He noted that with the rapid advances in digital technology, "we're not able to fathom the ability of this board."

The scoreboard will include four display areas 25 feet tall by 29 feet wide and provide the same quality viewing experience for fans in all seats, said Daktronics Vice President Jay Parker. The main scoreboard will have "multiple underbelly displays" for those sitting closer to the court.

Feigin said the Bucks were investing about $10 million for the main scoreboard, other displays inside the arena and large outdoor displays. Those include a 15-foot-by-85-foot see-through display that will wrap around the northwest corner of the arena and another large display that will be added to the side of the arena's new parking structure.

The main scoreboard will be twice the size of that in the Bradley Center, the Bucks said. That scoreboard cost $3.2 million and was unveiled in 2010.

That should help recruiting.

No seriously.  Remember in "Hoop Dreams" when William Gates was impressed by a cassette recording by the Marquette Radio announcer doing a play-by-play that included him?  Imagine what they could show a recruit on a kickass video board when they visit the new arena?
Have some patience, FFS.

We R Final Four

Yeah--William beat Notre Dame on that last second shot, I believe.

GOO

Will the BE let MU show replays of questionable foul calls?  I doubt it.  Will the score board operator update the stats timely...

Within 10 years, home tech will exceed the in game experience with VR, and game attendance will drop if they don't start making being at the arena a better experience.  They showed some replays last night, not so much on Saturday.

I'm almost certain that this is a big no-no under NCAA guidelines.

Edited to add:  Confirmed.  Prohibited on both official and unofficial visits per bylaws 13.6.7.9 and 13.7.3.  Adopted in 2004.

You're correct, but this is a Big East issue, not Marquette or BC issue

I believe it's Pat Hughes, current Cubs radio play-by-play guy if I remember correctly.

Essentially, personalized presentations.  Here's the rule for official visits (the one for unofficial is similar):

13.6.7.9 Activities During Official Visit. An institution may not arrange miscellaneous, personalized recruiting
aids (e.g., personalized jerseys, personalized audio/video scoreboard presentations) and may not permit
a prospective student-athlete to engage in any game-day simulations (e.g., running onto the field with the team
during pregame introductions) during an official visit. Personalized recruiting aids include any decorative items
and special additions to any location the prospective student-athlete will visit (e.g., hotel room, locker room,
coach's office, conference room, arena) regardless of whether the items include the prospective student-athlete's
name or picture. (Adopted: 8/5/04, Revised: 5/14/05)

That's kind of stupid.

The wording from the article, and this thread title, is misleading.

The display will NOT be the largest video board in the NBA. The display will be the largest EQUILATERAL display in the NBA. In a day and age where most new NBA arenas or updated arenas are moving towards wide screen display (see golden 1 center, smoothie king, quicken loans, bankers life fieldhouse etc.), this is an important distinction.

It's unclear to me why anybody would want equilateral when the growing trend is for widescreen display. Furthermore, according to a 2010 MKE JS article, the current bradley center screen is 32 ft x 25 ft. Perhaps the actual display will be larger, but I don't think it will be as drastic as people are making it out to be.

Any ideas as to why no widescreen? Cost-saving? Better for smaller market where consumers will pay less of a premium for sideline versus baseline? Curious as to your thoughts

Maybe not personalized, but I'm sure that there are ways of utilizing the screen and arena to Marquette's advantage.  Doesn't have to be personalized to have an impact on a recruit.

Yes it was Pat Hughes ... he did faux calls for every kid who visited that year (at least).  Side note -- the first draft of the script was writtten by the team managers

Absolutely.  The quality of the facilities is a huge draw in recruiting; probably one of the biggest.  And playing in a state of the art NBA arena with an incredible scoreboard would be way up there.  My comment was only that personalized presentation like in Hoop Dreams would not be allowed.  I have no doubt Marquette will figure out ways to show off the scoreboard to great effect.

They had more replays last night I thought, even of fouls called against us.

Meh. Who cares.

Maybe I'm in the minority but the size of a video/score board does not do much for me. The current one at the BC seems just fine to me.

Well it sucks from the $125 season tickets in the 430's when you can't even see it because the banners are blocking your view.

I don't think you realize how important a good video scoreboard is until you are at a game that doesn't have one.

Was just at Allstate for the MU game. I like it better than the BC because you are much closer to the floor. No need to look at a video board.

Again, maybe I'm in the minority, but I just don't care. I barely look at it. I'm watching the floor. I'm recording everything on my DVR if I want to see a replay of something.

Trying to find the player points and fouls was tough at the DePaul game.

Good thing our new arena will do both.

I guess what I appreciate are the names, detailed stats, and such that the more modern boards have.  It's annoying not to be able to glance up and see anything you would want to know.

Have some patience, FFS.
