Great write-ups from both Big Daddy and Matt Valasquez. I'm more interested to read about the offensive style of play and defense/rebounding overall than what specific percentage we hit from 3-point range in a single scrimmage.

In the alternative,  I could see it  an oral conversation someone saying, "Katin shot over 40% (3/8)" and the other party hearing, "the team shot over 40%." Although the actual percentage Katin shot was 37.5.

Unfortunately, when the media is not allowed you're not going to get this kind of depth... you're relying on recaps from Wojo, Kuyk, etc. and those guys aren't going to provide too much color for a scrimmage (and certainly not anything that might reveal game plan, strategy or be of any scouting benefit).  Stats are easy to report, and rather innocuous, so that's mostly what we can expect from these.

In other words, commentary on style of play, etc. typically comes from the observations/analysis of the journalists who actually watch the game.

Interesting to consider:  Of the 84 points MU scored, 69 were scored by Haanif, JJJ, Katin and Luke.  Velzaquez article mentioned Markus Howard hit a three which puts MU to 72 points.

Conclusion 1:  The rest of the team: Carter, Rowsey, Duane, Cohen, Hauser, Anim, Heldt managed to score 12 points combined.

Conclusion 2:  Rowsey and Duane likely will have their work cut out for them getting on the floor this year - and rightfully so as Cheatham, Johnson and Reinhardt are all better players and have more length.

I'm actually quite satisfied with the level of information we've gotten about this closed scrimmage. Like the open practice, it's not a real game. We're getting an early window into what the team might look like. Wojo and his staff are still evaluating players and lineups — and the best way to get the most from them.

Even if any of us were able to attend the scrimmage with Dayton in person, anything we saw could change between now and the start of the season.

Also interesting: 3 of those 4 players are seniors. Hopefully this bodes well for them taking on leadership roles this season — and that Wojo trusts them with the keys to the offense.

Alternately, it could simply mean they had the hot hand that day. Or, they benefited from favorable match ups versus Dayton. Or, they were part of a lineup Wojo wanted to get a good look at. Or, they needed the extra court time. Or, they're the best conditioned and got the most minutes. Or, they're the worst conditioned and Wojo tried to run them into the ground...

Big daddy mentioned that Heldt got the start as a reward and to help with the fouling issue for fish.

Would be interesting if heldt got a few starts this year in bigger games to help ensure fish is in the game at the end when he is likely needed most.

If heldt can start, play 10 min, get 5ppg and 4 rebounds, would be nice

True.  Guess my thinking was more along the lines of Reinhardt didn't come here to sit on the bench, and does have NCAA experience and has put up pretty respectable numbers elsewhere.  Looking back at the last half of last year, it was evident that Johnson was starting to reach his potential and was absolutely outplaying Duane, and perhaps even Henry and Haanif.  Haanif is a star in the making, and doubt he will regress from his freshman year.

Just think Duane and Rowsey will be relegated to back up roles this year, but should be HUGE contributors next season, while being key back ups this year.

I have pretty strong doubts about the relationship of ppg/rpg being linear to mpg.

We've all seen plenty of "drive-by-ass-whoopings" where a bench player comes into the game, pulls down a rebound, knocks down a couple shots and then comes out of the game during the media timeout before anyone realizes what just happened.  Wally was supposed to play a similar role last year, but unfortunately, Wojo had little choice but to utilize him more and more, which rendered Wally less and less effective. 

You can get some quick returns from such a "change of pace," but if you keep that player in the game too long, the other team will adjust and remind the fans why he doesn't play more than 8-10 mpg.

Davante's freshman year comes to mind. He averaged 20 points and 10 rebounds per 40 minutes — but played less than 10 minutes a game because of his poor conditioning (and the fact that he had to fight for minutes behind Chris Otule and Jae Crowder).
