If a deep pocketed benefactor were willing to put up enough money to restore the Warrior name, how much would he/she be required to donate?

I do know, Newsie is right on you knowing ball.

I believe a deep pocketed benefactor tried this and we rejected the offer
Retire Terry Rand's jersey!

As Dr. Evil would say ...

"ONE BEELLION DOLLARS!"

I'm not saying who might pay that, but he would call it a huuuge, beautiful deal.

Of course, he offerred a hell of a lot less than the lowest amount allowed by Marquette Fan in New York as a poll answer.  Surprise!

Geez, I wonder if the purpose of the poll is so that Marquette Fan in New York can decide how much he's going to offer?  Don't be cheap due, just go to the 200 mil.  That way the athletic department will have more than enough moula to buy out Wojo as a consequence of him not pursuing Kostas.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

Quote from: muguru
No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

So many here lament poor decisions by MU that make us look bad.    The blowback of changing the name back to Warriors, which at MU is deeply entangled in native American imagery, would be immense and well deserved.     The narrative would be... Marquette will do anything for money.

Um, that's not what he said.

Have some patience, FFS.

11 years ago I thought there could be a chance for Warriors again.  Then "Gold" happened (and the ensuing vote), and I realized it was never gonna' happen.  So, I just still call them Warriors.  That's about as good as it's gonna' get.

wadesworld

At least give me Hilltoppers.  Or Jumping Jez's.

Dwyane Wade single handedly got rid of that nickname...

Same here.  I once thought it may be possible, but that ship sailed years ago.  Now, it's gonna have to do to know that other fans (and even some hoops announcers) still think of the team as Warriors.

Let's go Warriors!

Heck, this same thread happened years ago.  Been there, done that.

While I think such a transition could be handled successfully, that would require an organization with a skill set that MU clearly doesn't possess, so alas I believe you are correct.

It's funny that they would be lambasted for changing back sans imagery because they took money, yet the original change was prompted by a secret exchange of money and assets.

Why do teams need nicknames or mascots at all?

dgies9156

Gang, certain things are constants:

1) It's cold in Milwaukee in the wintertime.
2) We're not an independent anymore
3) Al should be up for canonization (at least among us).
4) Crean and the Hillbilly will always be disliked.
5) The Warrior has gone to the big pow wow in the sky.

Face it, the Warrior is NOT coming back. Marquette is not for sale, at least not at a price any of us could ever imagine.

The Warrior decision was a bad one. But the demographics are working against it. There are almost as many living graduates who were graduated from Marquette as the Golden Eagles as there are Warriors.

Not closing Wisconsin Avenue and beheading the Warrior are Father DeUllio's legacies to the university. Thanks Padre! NOT!

AccredoJoe

Why not the Warriors. We can use ancient Hittite dress for the mascot. All the Hittites are dead so there will be no blow back

Not closing Wisconsin Avenue was one of the 4 great mistakes of Marquette.

They tried to close WI Ave. It was the city that nixed the closing. I interviewed for a job at Marquette at the time and even saw the drawings.

Honestly I don't think it was a big deal in the long run.

Not sure that is anywhere near as easy (then or now) as you imply.

avid1010

been an MU fan my whole life...i'm 33...could not care less what their mascot is....have always referred to them as marquette.  the generation that cares is aging (sorry, dad).

What are the other three?  We can bring them to the Fan Advisory Council...I hear that is where we get to air our grievances.
