See, I don't like Wojo's Warriors.  It shouldn't be tied to the coach.

That is why I thought Golden Avalanche was brilliant.  Tied to our past.  A non-controversial nickname.  Reflect our primary school color.  And provides a description of the students in gold shirts from the floor to the rafters (on a few nights.)

Like it or not, that is why "Grateful Red" is brilliant.  It is unique.  Ties to the University's "hippie" past (and present).  Incorporates their color in a unique way.  And let's you use all sorts of imagery that's fun.

Bird's Nest...Flight Zone...Marquette Maniacs are just cliches that could be applied to most schools.  No originality.  Nothing about them are unique.

I agree it shouldn't be tied to the coach unless its a past coach like McGuire.  Look at the whole Paint Touches blog thing, they're sticking by it(which they should) but in 10 years it probably won't have any relevance.

I'd really like to see something go back to Hilltoppers for the student section....plus there could be some good King of the Hill (cartoon) tie ins.

Like Golden Avalanche as well.  Grateful Red has zero connection with the vast majority of MU fans.

Grateful Red is UW's student section name.  Sorry I should have been more clear.  I was using it as a comparison.

Might as well make some money on it and be The Student Section brought to you by BMO Harris and MUScoop.com.

Exactly. That's why I suggested Baird's nest. It works quite well.

I doubt the Zizzo group had anything to do with this.  My guess is that this was pretty much an athletics internal decision.

Or maybe they did. The Zizzo group has a bunch of Badger alums working there....

Golden Avalanche

The choices are terribly generic.

MUWarrior4Life

how bout Guardians of the Lair, lol

MUfan12

We're missing the obvious one, given MU's student body...

The Traditionals.

The Aerie  or Eagles Nest

I could give my vote to The Aerie, The Roost or simply The Nest.

Even 70 years after WWII, I don't like The Eagle's Nest for the Hitler association. It's the very first thing that comes to mind for me. "The Eagle's Nest" also isn't as simple or strong as the above three options. I hope Marquette avoids this one.

Pretty much sums up my feelings exactly.  I think Wojo is great.  But history shows us that it is a near certainty that he'll either leave Marquette for another program or be fired.  Obviously, the first is much more likely.  So, we shouldn't name the student section after him...unless, of course, we do so in 30 years in honor of his retirement.

Love Golden Avalanche.  It seems so completely obvious to me for all the reasons you state.  Which is why it'll never happen.
Never wrestle with a pig.  You both get dirty, and the pig likes it.

The scoop should pool together some money and have a giant banner printed off for the first few games for the students to unroll over them that says "the Golden Avalanche." Like at a soccer game.

I would throw in a couple of shekels for that.

If my conversions are right, a half-shekel is approximately $5, so you're in for $20.  Great!

To play devil's advocate but why do we need to 'name' our student section?

PuertoRicanNightmare

What's wrong with calling it, "The Student Section?"

Skatastrophy

We could call them "The Future Alumni"

You actually have a degree from Marquette?

Quote from: muguru
No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

I'd chip in on a Golden Avalanche tifo as well. Connects to our history, has a nice link to the idea of a cascading wave of gold, and not something that will never be outdated.
