That's what the census is for. 

There is no national requirement for an ID card.

Your immigrant family was likely allowed in just as most were by signing a book and proving they weren't sick, and showing up on the door step of the US.  And they were let in almost without question.

Now it's decades of legal limbo, bureaucracy, court dates and tests.

A lot of people conveniently forget how easy it used to be to immigrate to the US until just over 100 years ago.

The Supreme Court recently gave the government permission to racially profile people. You don't even have to be suspected of a crime to be arrested, detained, denied phone calls for hours (or days), denied due process.

If you are overheard speaking Spanish - or even if you "look" Hispanic - you can be arrested without cause or warrant.

Dozens (at least) of U.S. citizens - including veterans and minors - have been arrested, detained and denied due process just for committing the apparently heinous crime of looking or sounding Spanish.

And tens of millions of people who claim to follow Jesus (not to mention tens of millions of Americans who don't seem to care about the Constitution) applaud all of it.

That is exactly like being tackled, handcuffed, and dragged away to an ICE detention facility because of the color of your skin while the President of the United States refers to you as disease-infested rapist.

I am not questioning whether the founding fathers had legitimate reasons to revolt.  I am just saying, the majority of colonists wanted nothing to do with it or sided with the British.

I am sorry to hear that masked police officers looked at the color of your skin and listened to your accent, then threw you to the ground without even asking you any questions, handcuffed you, threw you into an unmarked van, drove you to a detention center, threw you into a cell, booked you, denied you a phone call, and held you for hours (if not days) without due process.

That must have been very traumatic for you.
