I'm fine with it.  Just that we seem to be more of the nothings, unless using a lame logo on kid's t-shirts.  If they actually used the name, maybe it would get somewhere.  Hiding it in shame is even worse than forcing it on people.  Take the name and own it.  Not like there are ten other high level schools with the same name like Wildcats or Bulldogs, just three forgettable ones.  And just use an image instead of a cartoon logo to actually show the beast.

I like your response, chapman, and share some of your thoughts. Marquette does seem a bit passive and timid in how it uses and promotes the "Golden Eagles" nickname -- our "brand."

I never saw the need to abolish "Warriors," which I still view as a neutral, nonspecific, nondiscriminatory nickname. But Marquette bit on a movement in 1993 that applauded schools for getting rid of nicknames that could, even slightly, be interpreted to be improper.

Marquette is now the Golden Eagles. As a sometimes-reader of this site, I find it surprising that so many here feel the need to use "Warriors" over and over as some sort of "statement" about a decision made almost 22 years ago.

The obsession some have with "Warriors" means nothing in the big picture, but it certainly does not help our brand.

I totally agree that wanting to change the name from the Golden Eagles is a dialogue in futility.  However, there is no way that embracing the past - specifically with Warrior chants/references - does anything to harm or diminish MU's brand.  It's not an either or situation and wanting the Warrior references to stop is equally as futile of a dialogue.

I'm a Warrior ('88) so i don't get into many college basketball conversations with current college kids or recent grads, but i do interact with a bunch of late twenty to late forty people and there is not one college hoops fan (even casual) that isn't aware of the Warrior brand......it's a good thing.

Go Warriors/Golden Eagles/Fighting Sioux!

Who cares? It's Golden Eagles now.

If the old farts wanna keep calling us the Warriors, let them.

Warriors is a better nickname, but it ain't coming back.

WE old Warriors went to MU before people got wussified in the '80s.  Sorry, but when I look in the mirror I don't see a chicken.

How about the Marquette Bells, we could ring the "clarion" after every victory, even a connection to the Bells of St. Mary's.   Do we still have a clarion?  What's a clarion?

Agree 100%.  I don't tell others that they can't call us the Golden Eagles, so I don't get why they try to tell me to stop calling us the Warriors.

It has now been 22 years since Marquette changed its team nickname and mascot to "Golden Eagles." How 'bout we ALL live in the present and drop ALL of the repeated, grating and childish references to "Warriors?"

Let's all try showing our Marquette pride by referring to the Golden Eagles as "Golden Eagles."

Agreed?

Great!

Talk to more people.  There are many, many, "late 20's, causal fans" who don't know what the nickname was before they were in the first grade.

Tums Festival

We were the Warriors the entire time I was at Marquette, so that's what we'll always be to me. Whatever the current students and younger alums want to go by is none of my concern.

I thought I heard just last season "Let's Go Warriors" from the student section.  Am I crazy?

If so, looks like some of the students agree with us older folk.

That is correct. We always try to get in a let's go warriors chant at least once a game.

mu03eng

I don't make a deal about the Warriors (was in junior high when it happened) but I hate the Golden Eagle mascot and refuse to use it.

I will never wear or use the current mascot

I don't do "Warriors" and I find the whole "teal" thing really embarrassing.

Teal? That is funny.

And to ronald dragon: You probably want to re-study the rules for capitalization and for using an apostrophe.

Wow, you really got ronald dragon there.

Personally, what I find "grating and childish " is when someone tries to control what others do or say as a means of controlling their own irritation which presumably they cannot control any other way.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Proud Old Fart here -

There was a "contest"?  Was it a fair contest?  Were all entries allowed and/or counted?  You can fact check this before you answer the questions.

None the less, the official mascot is, in fact, a scrawny chicken reject from KFC and the nickname is Golden Eagles.  No getting around that.

But, for me, now and forever it's the Marquette Warriors!

Hope I got most of the punctuation and spelling right.

And by the way, Golden Eagles is lame.

With all due respect, of course.

This is the crux of the issue for many. Marquette announced a contest for the team nickname. When they didn't like the result they disregarded the process and simply picked their own name. Talk about intellectual dishonesty and ethical misconduct...

Marquette's lack of integrity in many things is disheartening. Somewhere, Jim Scott is puffing on his pipe, rubbing his flat top and flashing a sh1t eating grin...

We should abolish having a nickname altogether. We are Marquette. That's enough for me.

Wish you Warrior fans were just as upset about the change from "Hilltoppers."  We are, Marquette!!!!

There are many "late 20's casual fans" of music who don't know who Warren Zevon was and who Tom Waits and John Prine are. So what? Their loss. Go Warriors!

Marquette University decided in October 1993 -- almost 22 years ago -- to abolish the Warriors nickname.

The university then held a contest to arrive at a new nickname. Golden Eagles was chosen from more than 1,500 entries, outdistancing Lightning, and has been Marquette's team nickname since the start of the 1994-95 school year.
Where does one start with this nonsense? You have no idea what you're talking about.

I'm a Warrior Fan.
I'm not a Golden Eagle Fan.
If I buy MU Merchandise - and I do every year for my kids and every niece/ nephew - it will NEVER say Golden Eagles.

I reluctantly tolerate the name change which was made by the spineless in the beginnings of our current era of political correctness, however I value the tradition over the PC bit.

I'm pretty sure we all have discussed this subject at least on several occasions.  Nonetheless, while I prefer Warriors, I don't mind golden eagles.  I do, however, HATE the cartoon-y bird.  I, too, refuse to purchase anything with that bird on it.

I much prefer the late 90s/early 2000s bird.  Much more regal.  A regal eagle, you could say (I think I also made that same joke before as well).
