Years ago, I got into a long discussion with some friends and our consensus at the time was that Mr. Spock, Archie Bunker and J.R. Ewing were the three greatest TV characters of all time.

This was before HBO, SHOW, AMC, FX, etc were putting out amazing series, but I'd still probably put Spock and Archie on any short list. J.R., of course, not even close.
