Serious season expectations with 8
« on: December 09, 2014, 04:06:28 PM »
I don't remeber a team since Cuse had a boatload of injuries about 6-7 years ago when a team had so few options.  As has been noted Dawson wasn't playing and Luke at a minimum will get Burtons minutes so it doesn't seem there will be a serious uptick in players getting overworked.  But seriously, what is the ceiling here?  Floor conjecture is what truly worries me as program success, like game sucess, has momentum as a factor.  I know recruiting is aces, but a crap year could extend our 're-loading' period significantly.

Go marquette!!!

I think this is a rebuilding year than a reloading year.

Wasn't there a stretch in the season last year when Seton Hall had only 7 players dressing?

We will actually have more minutes to go around then we have had due to Fischer being eligible.  He will play 20+ once in game shape.  He will take up more minutes than Dawson and Deonte were giving us.

Now, if we have an injury, that is another matter.

The zone is key, can keep guys out of foul trouble and more rested.

Burton was a mess on the court, no D, no rebounds, wild shots and turnovers, Dawson who knows.  New coach wants to start over with his players, he can find one more player this year so
he will have 11 and 3 the following year so the classes are more even.  It would be good to find another rent a player for a year, maybe a point.

All true.  Back to my walk-on theme.  They only play in emergencies.  But we need 'em.

come one this is scoop, no rational view of the situation is expected.   barring injuries, they are fine.   injuries would be an issue...

Agreed, we do, in case of injury or even in blow out games where we are winning (if we get any of those after December).

Barring injuries - a huge issue now - I think the expectations are pretty close to what we thought they were yesterday.

John wasn't getting any minutes at all, and it's hard to imagine him suddenly cracking the rotation.  Deonte has a ton of talent, but as others have said, he has struggled immensely.  Don't know if it's because of his mom or the new system - probably some of both - but after watching his struggles, I expected him to be pretty inconsistent this year.

We will never know for sure, but my suspicion is that we'll end up about where I was thinking yesterday - around 4-5 in the BE.  One or two injuries though, and we may pay a visit to DePaul in the basement.

I also agree with jsglow - it sure would be nice to get a walk-on or two.  I still have 4 years of eligibility left - does MU offer an over-50 discount on tuition. ;)

For some reason reading this just made me laugh. Probably because they have been a cemented mainstay for a decade while other teams talk about worst case scenario's that lead to joining them lol.

Yeah, I guess that is pretty funny.  Our "worst case scenario" has been DePaul's everyday reality for years.

I always laugh when people refer to their program as a "sleeping giant."  How long does the giant have to be asleep before he is deemed comatose?

I'd say about 5 or 6 conference wins sounds right, not that this news changes that very much.  The rest of the conference looks better than I expected.  This team won't have any easy games but could also steal a few.

Deonte has disappointed all season long and Dawson hasn't played. We are essentially trading Deonte for Luke, nothing more nothing less. I think we'll be better than we are now, though I've gone through this season with zero expectations and I'm not going to change that philosophy now.

True brew, but we no longer have a warm body (Dawson) down at the end of the bench

Agreed, and while we can maybe handle one injury, two or more would be crippling.

I can't imagine Wojo liking these two transferring out right now with such a short bench.  Wonder how surprised he's was about Burton especially, and it all going down now.

Silver lining?
Cohen gets lots of quality minutes.
Ellenson gets more minutes than he probably would have gotten with Deonte and Dawson.

Dark clouds?
More PT means larger windows for possible injuries.

This lessens my expectations. I truly thought having a legit big man in Luke would help clear some space for Deonte. I thought he was going to be better and we would benefit from it. I think .500 in conference play is our ceiling. Depaul is our floor.

You actually have a degree from Marquette?

Quote from: muguru
No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.
