Having a little fun at ESPN's expense got me wondering.  This board has had a fair amount of fun at Duke's expense in the past, as well as some bitching about the supposed deference that Duke receives from referees and their flopping.

Now it's a new world with Coach K's ex-top assistant in charge at Marquette, and - to this point - performing very well.

Based on the above, is ripping on Duke still de rigueur, or will it be considered dirty pool?
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

It's still Duke.

Ripping on Duke, while fun and I did it, is/was usually more about jealousy than hating Duke.   Small, private school in the shadow of a large state school.   Long term success and stability.    Insane fan support.  And I am sure there is a video out there somewhere of Wojo's greatest flops.   But in the end, deep down, IMO it was jealousy.

I don't think that the criticisms were far off the mark, if off the mark at all, but I agree that the reason we cared and paid attention was jealousy.  I guess the proof will be if it becomes lees of a thing as the program continues (hopefully) to make big strides under Wojo.

I think it was too. Multiple championships...sustained success...amazing academics. I think some of us are a little envious of what they've accomplished.

However, on the flip side.......

• It's been incredibly annoying to hear Dickie V be Duke's chief cheerleader for 20+ years.

• Also extremely tired of hearing about those oh-so-clever Cameron Crazies. Mostly just a bunch of dweebs from Jersey still performing the same tired routines they did in the 80s.

GooooMarquette

Dickie V's schtick old a long time ago, but I agree the Duke rips were more envy than anything else.  With Wojo here, I'd be more than happy to see our program start to resemble Duke's.

I ripped on Wojo back in the day.

20 odd years later and now he's MU's coach, I must say that my disdain for anything Dookie is waning by the day.

Much like Notre Dame, I don't hate Duke or their players (aside from Laettner), I hate their fans.

Freeport Warrior

Was never a big fan, sort of like the Yankees and Cowboys to me. It all changed this last year. Took my son to Duke/'Cuse at Cameron and cannot recommend it more highly. Fans were great, atmosphere was electric, and southern hospitality on full display. There was zero douchebaggery going on in Krzyzewskiville -- just kids having fun, partaking in a few beverages, but nothing like you might expect. After the game, we met all the players just by waiting by the hoop outside the arena -- Jabari, Rodney Hood, even old legends like Grant Hill -- there were a handful of kids getting autographs. It was one of the most surreal experiences of my life. Jabari's family was so nice to us, we told him we hoped would get drafted by the Bucks. When Wojo got named coach and Jabari came to Milwaukee, it was perfect timing. Wojo, with his Duke pedigree and credibility, plus the return of Travis to MU helped remove the Bert stench. I am totally fine with being a "Duke north" in some ways -- they set the bar high, combining a great reputation and results. Wojo won't be here for life, but we are so far ahead from a credibility perspective than we have been in a while. I'm certainly going to enjoy the ride!

GurneeHitchkr

I say, out of respect for Wojo,  we just rip on North Carolina more now.

Agree with your comments and it might not be so bad if a little of the Dukie good qualities rub off here while we leave those undesirable characteristics behind.

I think Wojo brings some very good qualities to MU. He also can recruit so now if he can coach the administration has moved this school in a good direction. So far so good.

Perhaps what Dukie V is to Duke, Matquette V at JsOnline can become for Marquette.

I hope not.

I want a reporter, not a cheerleader. We have plenty of cheerleaders here.

Watched the first few minutes of the Duke/Carolina game.   Wojo was Derrick Wilson, before it was cool.

Agreed. Dookie V slurps Duke to infinity as compared to the Sultan slurp of Buzz.
Ripping on Duke does pale in comparison, though to ripping on No Dick (ND).
And of course, now that we are the Duke of the Midwest/BEast, we must be careful that Duke rips do not spill over into rips on the Duke of the Midwest/BEast!

Yes, ripping on NC is all good--not as good as ND, however. And then we must rip on the NCAA infractions people because they will let NC off the hook for their latest scandals--because after all, they are the Tarheels.
And speaking of Tarheels, how the hell do they get to keep that monicker and we had to get rid of Warriors?

Tarheel is a reference to soldiers from the civil war. As far as I know, there was never a racial component like the warriors did.

Tums Festival

Not to be all PC, but many Dookies said nice things about Marquette when Wojo was hired. That being said, Christian Laettner is a tool for no other reason then his big shot to beat UConn gets all kinds of air play when Jerome Whitehead's gets almost none.

I don't mind Duke. Hate seeing them win all the time because I always thought that should be Marquette. I like that Duke and Marquette are similar schools as both are private, similar sized (Duke I think has 16,000?) etc.  So that might make Wojo comfortable here.

On the Laettner shot - that was for the championship as I recall.  Jerome's was to get us into the championship game.

Actually, Laettner's  shot was in an elite 8 game (to advance to the final 4). And to correct Wolverine, it was against Kentucky, not UCONN.

Laettner's shot has gotten the airtime on CBS and its affiliates because it occurred when CBS was covering the Dance.  Whitehead's shot was on NBC...so as far as CBS is concerned, it never happened.

You are likely right. Somewhere in the cobwebs I recall it also had something to do with tarred and feathered. Maybe I saw that in a movie--don't remember.
