Tums Festival

Is this how an AD rips an outgoing coach?

Paint Touches ‏@PaintTouches 1m Cords: I was disappointed in the coach's comments about the conference and Fox Sports1.

I'm glad he said this. Eff Brett for blaming the conference for his leaving when in reality it was because he's an ethical sleaze.

"we have the resources to help a coach get to final four and win a national championship" - I hope that means they're willing to pay the market price for top coaches - we all know they are willing to pay to keep someone, but is Marquette truly willing to pay a top free agent price as part of all those resources?  Its been sounding like no.

which im not saying is a teribble position to have - but don't go sniffing around howland and smart if that's your philosophy

Nice....... I was hoping for Sienna Miller..........

Serious, she just asked "What are you doing and who are you texting, you been on laptop for days".  UGH.

My wife's dad asked her about the coaching change at Marquette -- the laser beams were pointed right at me as she answered.

I wouldn't say this was embarrassing or a PR nightmare in any way.

It gets MU a little attention on the local news tonight, but overall this was pretty banal and useless.

I don't understand why you came to this conclusion. Are you basing this off of random tweets and threads on this board or real evidence?

I don't think you can say we aren't willing to pay "market value" based on our past hiring history. Crean was a highly sought after assistant, but not a big name "free agent". Buzz was a completely unproven assistant that was extremely lucky to get any HC gig, let alone a top 25 HC gig. There was zero reason to pay top dollar for either Buzz or Crean.

If we end up hiring Wardle, Weber or Cuonzo Martin I will relinquish my season tickets.

This press conference was for one reason only!

To tell us alums that this coaching search is not risking our jobs over.  The recent spike in "you're fired"-worthy (non)activity among MU grads has put our university's credibility on the precipice.

This was essentially a press conference saying, "Just wanted to let you all know we are doing our jobs and the things anyone with a brain figures we are doing. We are just doing it 'live' in front of you, with cameras."

J-o-k-e.

It makes us look stupid. It hurts the perception of the athletic department/school. Sorry. But it does. Gives people a bad opinion....like they are watching amateur hour.

And, once someone has a negative view on someone/thing, you have to work three times as hard to get them swayed back to positive. This does not help that.

But no one (other than us) is watching or paying attention to this.  So I don't think it hurts Marquette at all.  ESPN isn't going to spend one second on this.  It was a vanilla "update" about what's going on.  The only real news related to how they're handling the recruits and Cohen-- which confirmed what was assumed.

There's an echo chamber on the message boards.  No one in the country is paying much (or any) attention to our coaching search.

This.
For this to have to an effect on Marquette's reputation outside the insular world of MU fandom would first require that anyone outside the insular world of MU fandom is actually paying attention.

Most normal people care about the NCAA tournament and their brackets. This isn't even a blip on their radar. Not even the blip a small, private flight from Milwaukee to Richmond this morning would make.

Tell that to Kentucky who has had three coaches in 7 years.

The 2 before Callipari were basically forced out and fired. That's a lot different than taking a job with a different school when you become successful.

Im guessing biding time. Shaka is out, Howland wants too much $$, they must be interested in that UVA guy.

Where has it ever been reported Howland wants too much money?

It hasn't. That perception came from one poster's misinterpretation of a tweet. As usual, many just decided to run with it.

Speeding up the President announcement to yesterday and now an announcement today showing some stability in AD, at least for a year with a proven director.  This presser was not meant for the general public.  So, yea, this was important.

My sentiments as well.  I believe this to be a commitment mechanism.  We have officially put a president in place.  And now, we have made it publicly known that we officially have an AD in place.

The public nature of these pressers means that we cannot back out.  The potential coaching candidate sees this.  It's a way of holding up our end of the deal, as it were.

Some of you are incapable of following a linear process.

This was Cords telling Shaka  "I will be hear for as long as it takes to hire an AD that you are comfortable with"  This was for Shaka and the recruits.

Hopefully Broeker stays as defacto Basketball AD, if he and Shaka hit it off.  Seems like that is a role he is comfortable with.  Hire an Associate AD - Non-Revenue Sports to cover everything else.

Hunt's Blog:

Other than Bill Cords' commitment to stick around until at least next spring, not much came out of a 20-minute press briefing the interim athletic director held Thursday on the coaching search.

Cords would not confirm or deny that he contacted Virginia Commonweath coach Shaka Smart.

He would not comment on any candidates.

He said the level of interest in the job from candidates has been high.

He said Marquette will get "the best guy."

He said he didn't worry about competition from other schools because he believes Marquette has everything in place to get a top-shelf coach.

He said the former MU president, Father Robert Wild, is involved in the process along with new president Mike Lovell.

He confirmed that assistants Brad Autry and Isaac Chew have been let go and that assistant Jerry Wainwright has been temporarily retained to make sure the current players maintain a consistent schedule.

I've learned that former star Doc Rivers, who currently coaches the Los Angeles Clippers, is in on the hiring process as an adviser.
