Buzz Williams' Spillproof Chiclets Cup

It's a f****** uniform for one damn game. "It doesn't look good", "it's pink". Who gives a rat's ass? It's for a cancer benefit. Really? There is something bigger at stake here than just a game. Money made from Saturday's game could potentially change the lives of people and help heal people who had their life wrecked by this terrible disease.

Disgraceful. You all should be ashamed of yourselves.

I vote that we should help more people. After all, Breast cancer is only the 4th-most prevalent cancer in the United States. #3 is Prostate Cancer, whose color is of course, light blue.

Nahhhhhhhhhhhhh, forget it. We never win anything in those jerseys.

This is Coach Mac's third year with Creighton and they have done the pink out game each year since he's been there. Theresa McDermott (Greg's wife and Doug's mom) is a breast cancer survivor so the cause really hits home for the program.

They've really turned it into a nice deal. They do a full pink out in the arena and Pink Out shirts are donated for the first 16k people. Its looks pretty cool actually

The jerseys go on auction for about 10-12 days and this years just closed the other day and they go to the American Cancer Society. First year they raised 20k, last year they raised 24k and this year it got all the way up to 48k! Doug's jersey went for 10k alone.

Its an awesome atmosphere every time its happened and that will only multiplied with GT coming to town (yes they have struggled but its a Saturday night game and this game has been circled since the schedule came out). Here's a picture of this year's jersey:

Hey guys! What's the deal with cancer!?!?!?

Jamil Wilson's mother died of breast cancer. Any more questions or comments?

+1. Amazing what some folks gripe about. Great cause, who cares how much money it raises. It's about awareness.

Not liking pink uniforms doesn't make someone pro-cancer. You're better than that.

+1. People can have opinions. And those opinions don't make them the devil.

Also, awareness only really helps if there's some education to go with it. Hopefully they reference some websites or other information sources during the game.

I really think you guys are asking the wrong question here.  Way more important than the color, who is number 40?  Can he hit a three?

If it helps Jamil step up and have a big game and we beat Nova, I'm cool with the pink jerseys for every game.

6 years ago I received chemo and radiation for breast cancer. I had chemo during basketball season.  I didn't miss one game. MU basketball got me through chemo. It is what kept me going during the horrors of chemo. If they would have worn pink uniforms it would have been a huge uplifting moment for me. Even though I pronounced I wouldn't be wearing any pink sh**.   Somehow my favorite team, my passion wearing pink would have seemed like a personal support. If it helps one woman undergoing what I did I say wonderful.  For those of you who hate it, thank God you don't have cancer

Wow.

Well, then I hope Buzz is wearing this

That suit is fantastic.

Those uni's are horrific.

It is just time to move on from the pink.  One day a year for awareness; maybe one month a year.  It loses its impact when it is every weekend.  Just not special anymore.

Boxing doesn't exactly pay enough to get me compeitive in those auctions. Plus they're always game worn and I'm 5'7" I'd look like a fool in a real jersey.

Everyone on this site who is not a current player (and I hope that means everyone on this site) looks like a fool in a real jersey.

As long as we are going down this path.....why stop with the uniforms....lets paint the visitors locker room a matching Pink...isn't there a team that does this?

Now we've got them psyched on and off the court!

I think the visitor locker rooms at Iowa football stadium are or were pink, Hayden Fry was the instigator IIRC.

Sheriff Joe, Pima County AZ, used (still does?) to garb the inmates in pink, I believe, to keep them more docile.

He does it to humiliate them.

It's unbelievable that people are not allowed to opine that these uniforms are ugly...and they are. We all know its (supposedly) for cancer awareness. We all know somebody who has had cancer and, unless you're blind as hell (black uniforms?) we all know they're ugly uniforms and, frankly, it's a cheesy stunt. The NFL has killed the entire "pink movement," Unless you think high school freshmen wearing pink wristbands are attuned to the horrors of
Breast cancer

CTWarrior

They are ugly/garish, and that is precisely why they will garner some attention, which is the point after all.  I don't think they'll do much to raise awareness.  Who will be watching this game that isn't aware of breast cancer?  What does "raise awareness" even mean in real terms?  That said, if doing this helps raise funds for cancer research and helps some people affected by cancer feel supported, then I'm all for it.

Great cause, who cares how much money it raises. It's about awareness.

Because most of the people who will be watching the game aren't "aware" of breast cancer.

I have dealt with cancer in my immediate family this year, and even so, I believe the whole "awareness" thing is a load of crap, no matter what cause you are talking about. It is an excuse to raise money without having to use it on anything meaningful, like research or support for victims.  You can send out a letter asking for money, and if you print "Get an annual mammogram" on the back of the envelope, all of a sudden, that's not a fundraising cost, it's expenditures for "awareness".

I have had close relatives with Breast Cancer.  It can be a horrible disease.  That being said, there are dozens of cancers that kill but only pink for breast cancer can line the pockets of Nike, the NFL, Kohl's Department Stores, etc.  Sure "a portion of proceeds" but those portions are often miniscule.

Color me skeptical.  Many other ways to affect cancer.

This. Maybe MU can petition to bring back the bumblebees to benefit colon cancer awareness? Kills more people annually than breast cancer and gets little to no attention.

I don't think the detractors to the pink uniforms are detractors because they're anti-cancer or anti-cause.  Nobody here (presumably) is.  You can get sick and tired of cancer awareness events being held everywhere you look, you can list the ill deeds of the Komen foundation, you can call out hypocrites and posers for supporting something they know nothing about, but none of that makes you pro-cancer.

Additionally, I don't think it has to do with how "ugly" the uniforms are per se.  Those 77 uniforms were something ugly.  The bumblebee uniforms were ugly.  Heck, I'd go so far to say that the barber pole piping on the current unis is somewhat ugly.  So what... we're not the ones wearing them.

Frankly, I think the detractors are simply those who find pink emasculating or homosexual, consciously or subconsciously.  There's still this "real men don't wear pink" mindset floating around society that is about as archaic as the concept that the earth is flat.  I had a coworker (UW alum) think he was taking a shot at me this morning because he saw a picture of the uniforms... I'm sure he thought that I would be embarrassed by my alma mater would be wearing *gasp* pink uniforms.  After telling him that they could wear Speedos for all I care as long as they beat Nova, I turned the tables and emailed him the following:

Needless to say, he was the one who is now appalled and embarrassed, and he hasn't spoken to me for the past hour.  It's been a very peaceful morning.

There is no "real men don't wear pink" segment of society. That's as antiquated as high button shoes (hat tip, Harry Caray).

Glad you pulled through and are doing ok now. Even more awesome that MU basketball helped you get through it. I agree. If it helps one person, then its worth it. I think it also probably means A LOT to Jamil. I wouldn't be surprised if he gave us an inspired performance this Saturday wearing the pink jersey.

Looks as if they are actually referring to it as "Suits and Sneakers" this time around which I have never actually heard before (or I just wasnt paying attention - perhaps more likely).

http://coaches.acsevents.org/site/PageServer/?pagename=CVC_FY12_Suits_Sneakers

Will this be the year that idiot Coach Crean puts his extreme vanity aside for just one day and actually wears a suit with sneakers, or will he go with the track suit/wind shirt as he has each of the past years?

Coaches and their staff are encouraged to wear sneakers with their game attire while coaching games during the weekend

Unless of course, you're Coach Crean, where only your assistants wear sneakers with their game attire, but your game attire suddenly becomes athletic apparel.

Pettiness on my part? Absolutely, but it has driven me crazy every year. Check your fricken ego for 1 day. The guy is an unbelievable pud whack.

Crean is a pud whack. Now that I had not heard before--and an unbelievable one at that +1000
In a related matter who is a bigger pud whack, Crean or Jim Harbaugh?

I think this whole "people think men think pink is unmanly" concept is crap.  Is there a small segment, I'm sure, there is also still a flat earth society.  I don't have objections to the uniforms, I have issues.  The uniform is fine, but I think it could have been executed better(baby blue with pink trim, both cancer colors).  I think awareness is great, but I also have an issue with the pink campaign.  I'm not pro-breast cancer, but I do think the pink campaign has the effect of "sucking the oxygen out of the room" when it comes to fundraising, especially cancer fundraising.  I've had multiple family members impacted by cancer of all forms, some of their own creation, some of rare kinds, some fatal some not.  The point is that there is a valid debate to be had around execution of the uniforms and the pink campaign without being anti-anything.  That kind of "if your against you must be for" mentality stifles legitimate discussion.

Not necessarily directed at you Benny, just a general statment
"A Plan? Oh man, I hate plans. That means were gonna have to do stuff. Can't we just have a strategy......or a mission statement."
