Very good article.  Highlights that the new conference is a values based, mission driven entity.  This foundation will serve its members well.  Thanks for sharing.

No good deed goes unpunished.  After reading that article, I think it is fair to say Marquette played a key role in getting Creighton into the Big East.

And now their inaugural game will probably have McDermott put up 35 and 12 against us in Omaha on NYE.

It shows that once the decision was made to break off, that the C-7 did it with a plan and a vision.    And that they considered many of the things and prospective schools mentioned on this board, and much more besides.   And then they worked their plan.

Nice article. Years ago I had to choose between Creighton and MU for med schools. Went with MU but Creighton sent that first acceptance letter so I'll always have a soft spot for them. Glad they are on board. Plus, they still have their med school - MU divested theirs before I started!

+1.

Great find TS.  Best article I've read on the process.  Looking forward to an insider piece from the MU or GU perspective.

I am sure Mike Hunt has been working on that piece since November. I hope he has space on the mantel for a Pulitzer.

QuoteLannon said he called DeGioia and asked the Georgetown president point-blank: "Are you supporting Creighton for admission to the Big East?"

As he had throughout the process, Lannon said, DeGioia didn't let on one way or the other.

DeGioia in a recent interview didn't recall that conversation with Lannon. He said he didn't know why there would have been talk of Georgetown opposing Creighton.

"... From the very beginning, Georgetown has been an enthusiastic supporter of Creighton, and we are pleased they are joining the Big East,'' he said.

Figures that the one secular president in the C7 has to turn out to be a schmuck.  My advice for DeGioia: there are two reasons to use an excuse of "I don't recall the conversation"... a) when you're trying to cover something up or b) when you're senile.

On this historic date, not only has the Big East been reborn, but the honor of who will be the conference heel has also been announced.  Congratulations, Hoyas... you're now officially the New York Yankees of the Big East.

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

Couldn't agree more.  That's why it is so important that we overtake them as the flagship program in the conference so that he doesn't feel like he can do whatever he wants.

I don't like the talk of Creighton falling to the bottom of the new league.  Sure, teams have to fill the 7-10th place spots, but that doesn't mean those teams can't beat up on quality non-conference opponents and have a respectable showing in league play.  Besides Seton Hall, I'm hopeful every team in the league will be perennially competing for NCAA tournament bids in a few years.

I wouldn't really think they would.  Yes, they will lose McDermott, but still have been very good over the past 10 years or so.  I think Depaul, Providence, and Seton Hall are the front runners for 8,9, and 10 status...

One secular president? Apparently, someone forgot to tell the presidents at Butler and Seton Hall they are now clerics, too.

I was speaking only of the C7, so naturally, I was excluding Butler.... but I did overlook Seton Hall.  That one's on me.

More to the point, why does it matter at all if one, two, or all of the presidents are secular or are part of one order or another? Hint: It doesn't. All that matters is the decisions they make and how they make them.
