It would have been too painful watching the Celtics decline.  Garnett and Pierce are too old to do it, and Rondo is a head case, so that situation was going nowhere.  Good luck in L.A.

I heard from a credible source Doc was looking for a change so this makes sense. Good for him in securing an enviable opportunity and good for the Celtics for extracting some value in the process. Everybody wins.

Doc HAD to know that rebuilding would have to happen during his 5-year contract. The way the guys hugged at the end of the year indicated (to me, at least) that they all knew it was over. Contracts don't mean much I guess. Glad he was working it through with Danny. Going to be some lean years for my Celts.

If Garnett doesn't get traded, I wonder if he's going to hate on Doc like he hated on Ray Allen for leaving the Celtics and making deals with a better team. So far it's worked out for Allen.

Its out in the open that Rondo, Pierce and Garnett are not liked amongst other marquee players in the league. Allen was a great fit on the court but not off the court. Its essentially the 3 celtic guys vs. The rest of the nba. It will be interesting whete they all end up if boston decides to start from scratch.

I actually hate the fact i even know this because i dont wven follow the nba - just have a friend that works in the front office of the thunder.

The nba sucks because it married hip hop in the late 90's and a divorce at this point is impossible.

He didn't violate the contract...not sure why you think "they don't mean much."

What's interesting here is that Vinny Del Negro is developing quite a reputation as a coach who can get a team from Point A to Point B but not to Point C or Point D.

He made the playoffs with the Bulls but Paxson correctly realized that they needed a better coach to reach the next level. Enter Thibodeau.

Meanwhile, in Clipperland, Del Negro had a very talented team but couldn't win in the playoffs, so he had to go. Enter Rivers, who is known for getting the very most out of his teams.

Also interesting: Both organizations turned to the Celtics after deciding to dump Vinny.

I think Del Negro isn't a very good coach who got has gotten lucky by landing into teams with talented rosters.  I can't believe that he is actually going to be getting a third chance with the Nuggets.

Agree with Skink. Vinny has been able to take over talented teams already at Point B and not drag them back to Point A.

The next year, with Thibs actually coaching the team, they went 62-20.  The only real additions were Boozer, Brewer and Korver...but those guys aren't worth 21 wins.

In no way am I suggesting that Vinny is near the coach that Thibs is  - he's not -  but the continuing maturation of Derrick Rose and Taj Gibson, plus the additions of Boozer (17/10 guy), Asik and Korver were all huge in that team's improvement.
Thibs is a great coach, best in the league with Pops, but no coach is worth 21 wins.
