Bro Bible did a top 100 bars for bros thing and Murphy's came in at #39. Pretty comical write up if you ask me  http://www.brobible.com/college/article/100-best-college-bars-bros-2/page-2

"Theo" has definitely never set foot in Murphy's.

Surprised no tweets from you know who....

I used to hit Kilroy's quite a few times during law school...definitely a Brocentric Frat Bar...

Chicks go to Murphy's?  The very few times I stepped into there it had to be over a 10:1 guy:girl ratio in there, and of those few girls it had to be about a 10:1 overweight:in shape girl ratio (with a total of 11 girls in there).

You were probably there when my roommates' (at the time) band was big. Mike and Joe. I was more of an Irish Lion guy. Although Nick's on game day was a staple. Had to sink the Bismarck (that is not a euphemism).

Murphs used to be more of a typical college bar.

Pool tables, pitchers of beer, big mugs, darts, pop-a-shot, fooseball, etc.

I spent a lot of time in there. This was the era before everybody had a cellphone (2001-2002), so "heading to Murphs" was an easy way to catch up with friends and acquaintances.

Used to be a decent Juke in there as well.

I'm told that it has a DJ now and a dance floor. Obviously it's a bit different now, and probably more bro-ish.

I think Caffrey's has become more of the general hangout spot, with a pop a shot, better patio, more laid back atmosphere.  At least that's how it was in my day (2004-2008). Murph's became the more bro-ish dance party spot, and spot to pick up randos for the night. You went to Caffrey's with your friends, you went to Murphs to meet a girl. I always preferred the vibe of Caffrey's. Plus it seemed like the bartenders had much more generous pours there. For people who went to both, it was always, "start at Caffs, end at Murphs"...Murphs was dead until about 11 pm, and Caffs was slowing down by midnight.

I think they tried to differentiate the character of the places once they went under the same ownership, so there wasn't too much cannibalism of one another. It seems like it worked pretty well.

Stronghold

Marquette's campus needs a couple more bars.  Those 2 get old fast.

Heg's couldn't even survive. I suspect students have and will abandon the campus for third street. That seems to be the trend, anyway.

Being on campus now Caffs is definatly the place people go to hang out. Never been cause theyre super strict on IDing people but eveybody talks about going to Caffs. Brothers at U of I is pretty great too.

I'm still bitter that Blows closed. That bar was easily my favorite on campus while I was there

Its the exact same bar, with different food and a different name. Hasn't changed all that much.

I disagree completely sure it's the same physically but the atmosphere is 100% diffrent (alive during the day and dead at night). I was back on campus quite a bit this past season going to games and visiting my brothers and I don't think I saw anyone in Sobelmans past midmight maybe even earlier.

Part of the reason I enjoyed Angelo's so much was the scene in there past 1am which was a complete sh!tshow. Our routine would be come back from downtown pop into Murphy's realize it sucked and then go next door to finish off the night. Always had a good time there.

I agree, Angelos was significatly better than Murphys. Not to mention they served lasagna sticks which happen to be the key to my heart. Perfect place to have a nightcap

Fair enough I admit I haven't been there late at night yet...only been to Sobleman's during the day and for dinner.

I never really went to Blows late at night either though, at least after I turned 21.

I am still bitter that Angelo's was ever considered a bar.

Back in my day, it was a pizza place where you could get a beer to wash down your food.
Have some patience, FFS.

MarsupialMadness

I never understood this.  Someone must owe Mr. Murphy a few favors, because they were declared one of the top college bars by Playboy magazine a few years ago as well.  There is absolutely nothing exceptionally awesome about Murphy's... outside of Buc Hunter.
