Maybe someone at Prada is a Catholic and donates?

I'm sure that's the case, just as Mercedes donates the Popemobile....but its about perception

If he's supposed to be cleaning up I feel bad for him. The Church's finances are an absolute disaster right now and are only going to get worse as settlement/damage payments continue to be incurred by the sex abuse scandels.

Might be time to fire up the Indulgence press.

If you're curious about a MU Jesuit's reaction to the new Pope .. Fr. McDermott is a '91 grad, Jesuit, and MU Board of Trustee member.

Isn't liability for the sex abuse at the diocese level?

He was my next door neighbor at McCormick Hall freshman year.

That was a great read!

Yes but those issues tend to filter up. The Vatican also just had a serious ethical problem with the head of their central bank. Italy stopped payments to the central bank because they are not confident that proper anti-money laundering protections are in place.

The article is just on the Church's finances in the USA, but in a country that large it becomes a Vatican concern as well.

As someone who has received 8 years of education from Jesuits, I am happy to see a Jesuit Pope but doesn't the opulence that comes with the Papal position directly contradict their vow of poverty?

Jesuits aren't supposed to have positions in the church hierarchy, either (bishop,etc.).  But there you go.

As a cardinal, Pope Francis practiced a life of humility and simplicity as much as was practical.
Have some patience, FFS.

You actually have a degree from Marquette?

Quote from: muguru
No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

The catholic 7, or at least GTN and MU should wear little fisherman logos on the jerseys. Total power move.

... is there another reason why he was in NYC in the first place besides the game?

Like Fr. Sheehan?

I know Fr Sheehan and he never espoused Liberation Theology. He is a Universal Salvationist but he was very strongly against clerical involvement in secular politics. Any suggestion otherwise is simply wrong.

There was a Jesuit who taught Theology at Marquette in the 70's. He went down to Nicaragua to help the Sandinistas and ended up as Danny Ortega's Minister of Agriculture. He was particularly involved in the break up of the latifundias. I heard him speak in DC and he made the campesinos out to be latter day Apostles.

He and Fr Cardenal, the Jesuit Sandinista Minister of Education, were cited by John Paul II as examples of unacceptable political behavior, especially since Christians could not also be Communists.
