Wow, the first Jesuit Pope - Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio from Argentina.

Now, how does that help the new Big East? =)

Jumping Jesuits!   We have a new pope who's a Jesuit.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_Francis

A 78 year old?

Seriously, he's older than my dad and I don't want my dad making real complicated decisions these days.

+1  My honest opinion.  They want a few old dudes so that none of them alone gets stuck with the blame of the pedo era.

Almost certainly one of the 5 oldest popes ever at election. The previous #5 was 78 years, 3 days.

I think he's 76... but your point is taken. Maybe they wanted to someone with an expectedly brief reign that would have a little more freedom to rub some people the wrong way to get stuff done without needing to work with everyone for 30 years?

I am just relieved it wasn't Buzz

You are correct...math is hard.

Your explanation makes some sense.

This should help recruiting.

76, from Argentina and first Pope outside of Europe.  Was hoping for Cardinal Dolan from NY, a younger Cardinal with some enthusiasm.  Oh well, maybe next time, but this new Pope does seem alright.  At least you can hear him talk.

BBC is speculating that there was a vote split between 2 more controversial candidates so they chose a 'compromise' who wouldn't' be in office as long.

Selfishly, I was hoping for Dolan because 1. 'Merica. 2. He confirmed me, which would have been really cool.

I'm glad it was someone from South America. I had also thought the Cardinal from Ghana or from Brazil would have been good choices. Gives a good nod to the importance of the Church in the Southern Hemisphere.

Dolan being archbishop of MKE when the sex abuse scandel broke makes him a pretty long shot I think.

The fact that he's American didn't help much either.

I think the fact that he's an American hurts more. People were actually saying about him and Boston's Cardinal that their selection would be perceived as a CIA plot. Just to avoid having to deal with the headache of dealing with America-hating conspiracy theories it's worth going in a different direction.

There are many Cardinals out there in same predicament, many.....

I believe this is a "bridge" Pope selection with his first being from outside traditional Europe, first named Pope Francis and spending his entire priest career in Argentina.  The next Pope should be younger.

Have to admit, like his backstory.  Gave up the Cardinal residency, the Cardinal car/driver thing and just had an apartment.  Said he didn't need all that stuff.  Oh boy, is he in for a change.

Pretty sure Dolan was brought in after the sex scandal broke. Weakland was the guy who let it all go down.

I love that. I hope he brings some of that attitude to the Papacy.

Yeah, they just said he took a public bus to work everyday.  Like I said and hope, that this Pope will bring some reform, etc, then comes a young, vibrant guy.
