The circumstances weren't ideal, but Trent Lockett is at Marquette, and everything is going pretty well so far.

Didn't think it would necessarily be seen like that. What about what Paint Touches does? It's pretty much the same thing, is it not?

Just throwing some crap at you, not to be taken seriously.

Just don't negatively tweet at recruits.

The Process

Relax. Respect the Process.

No problem. Have always looked at the board. Going to start being a bit more active. Thanks.

Seconded. And stick around and talk with us!

I can do that. What are your guys' expectations for Lockett? Any points per game average in mind?

He may not start immediately, but he will definitely be starting and seeing big minutes by the beginning of BE play.  I don't think he will score substantially more than last year, because he has better players around him, but I also think a lot of what he will bring will be hard to measure.

trebby123

I think he will probably be their leading scorer. He'll probably start, because they need some experience, and because he does so in a few different ways. Agree he's probably not going to score much more than last season, but maybe a point or so more (best case scenario).

I didn't think he would start immediately, but since Buzz took him to BE Day I think his role will be big.

The only reason I say he may not start immediately is because Buzz tends not to do that with transfers.  And I don't think starting is that big of a deal anyway.  He will get huge minutes.

Buzz takes seniors to Media Day. Rob Frozena went. I wouldn't read into that.

Frozena was in the program for four years and certainly earned it.

I think he'll avg. 16+.

Look at his jr. numbers compared to Wes' Jr. #'s.

http://statsheet.com/mcb/players/compare?add=trent-lockett&p1=23-wesley-matthews

Very similar.

Put him on a faster, better team, and his shooting percentage could stay the same, but he'll simply get more shots. Unleashed, right?

If he has a good year shooting 3's (like Wes as a senior), Lockett could have a BIG year.

trebby123

I was on the MUTV broadcast of Marquette Madness, and compared Lockett to Matthews. Wes had a bit of a better outside shot, but extremely similar builds and athletic ability.

16 may be a bit much, but I've told many people I expect Lockett to be the team's leading scorer for a couple reasons.
1. Realistically, who else is it going to be?
2. He's a pretty darn good player, who is also quite experienced in the college game (albeit the Pac 12).

Lockett has a good chance to be MU's leading scorer but he's also the type of player who can have an impact on a game without scoring a whole lot. He hits the boards, he defends well and he can create for others. I'm anticipating that he'll put up a stat line similar to Wes in his senior season. His game seems like a very good fit for Buzz's system.

As for starting, I expect him to be a starter for most of the season but he's also a mature senior who probably wouldn't put up a stink if he came off the bench. Either way, he's going to see big, clutch minutes.

From the first two sentences, you make him sound like Vander Blue, but he can score :)

He's very solid and MU is lucky to have him. He'll start and be MU's leading scorer. Where else will MU get points?

Lockett put up 13ppg for a team that averaged 61 points and 46 shots/game. Last season, Marquette averaged 76ppg on 58 shots. Those team averages may go down this season but with the increase in pace, I don't think increasing his scoring by 3ppg seems like too much.

Didn't really think of it that way. Perhaps he's Vander with body control.

Bingo. Look as Wes' numbers as a jr, and look at Wes' numbers as a Sr.

Wes didn't become a totally different player, but the pace of play increased, Wes shot more 3's, and kept a similar efficiency.

That was good enough to boost him up to 18pts.

In fairness, McNeal had a monster year as a senior as well, so Wes wasn't really the focus of most defenses.

Lockett may face some more double teams and such. Nobody is scared of giving up a jumper to Vander or Junior.

bilsu

There are a lot of candidates to be MU's leading scorer besides Lockett.

Gardner is MU's returning leading scorer with a 9.5 average. He certainly would have averaged double figures, if he had not gotten hurt. He would be my first pick, because he is a very good free throw shooter with the ability to draw fouls.

My next pick would be Mayo. Another good free throw shooter he can shoot from outside and take it to the basket.

It could also be Blue or J. Wilson.

There is so much balance that I do not see one of them getting significantly more shots than another player, so it will come down to offensive efficiency and there is no one that will be more efficient than Gardner.

One of Lockett's strengths is offensive rebounding, but that is also Gardner's strength.

Desert_warrior

Not really related to his anticipated performance but I would think he has got to be pretty excited for the upcoming season. Living in Phoenix, I can tell you that ASU is a mixed bag in terms of success but they never seem to do "cool" things. In his final year of college ball, Trent is going to play on an aircraft carrier, go to Maui, play at MSG and play on a team that has had good success. A big improvement over ASU and the the Old Spice Classic from last year.

Based on what I saw at Marquette Madness (admittedly just a brief look), I think he will be a great addition and would not be at all surprised to see him lead the team in scoring. He looked very athletic, and had a very smooth shooting stroke. While I somewhat get the comparisons to Wes, I think Trent has more ability to create and shoot on the move than Wes. I am not saying he's a better player overall.

I fully expect Trent to log heavy minutes and be a leader on this team. I'm excited to see what he brings once the season starts, and anticipate he'll get better as time goes on as I'm sure they'll be some transition period at the beginning.
