A buddy of mine is headed to Milwaukee for a few days and he loves steak/steakhouses.  Asked me what the best steakhouse in Milwaukee was.  Any suggestions?
Calvin:  I'm a genius.  But I'm a misunderstood genius.
Hobbes:  What's misunderstood about you?
Calvin:  Nobody thinks I'm a genius.

5 O'Clock club is usually pretty good.  Also, the Milwaukee Steakhouse (technically in Tosa) on 61st and Bluemound is also very good.  The Chef used to be at 5 O'Clock club before the new owners, and it is more casual than some of the other nicer steakhouses.

I like 5 oclock but I've also really enjoyed Maders (spelling?) on 3rd street.
Bring back FFP!!!

Jackson Grill is really good, though a bit off the beaten path at 37th and Mitchell.

Jackson Grill is excellent. Don't go on Friday or Saturday night without a reservation.  Either it or 5 O'Clock would be a great Milwaukee-type experience.
Have some patience, FFS.

I have not been in years, but I remember that Carnevor was really good. Still seems to get good reviews.

For my money Carnevor and 5 O'Clock are 1 and 1a.

The flavor Carnevor gets on their sear is absolutely incredible. The restaurant has a nice, modern feel to it. It'll definitely cost you though, as everything is a la cart. I highly recommend the truffled mashed potatoes.

5 O'clock probably has better flavor in their actual meat, but its roasted (I think) instead of seared. A little bit different. The place itself is much more old fashioned and a supper club. The meal will come with a salad to share, which can help keep the price down a bit.

You really can't lose between the two. It just comes down to what type of atmosphere you are looking for. Modern and trendy, or vintage supper club.

Oh, and if you do 5 O'clock, tip the parking lot attendant before going inside.

I thought Ponderosa was the hip and trendy spot.

(I always spent my money on beer rather than food), but the best place in Milwaukee to get a steak in a restaurant which shares a name with a Styx album will always be Pieces of Eight.

Big fan of Butch's. Like food and atmosphere.

I take it you missed the Dirty Dining segment on Butch's.

Jackson's is a great choice, but you need a reservation ANY night.  It doesn't have many tables, and fills up almost every night.

Um, I hope you were kidding about Pieces of Eight.  Long gone.

Carnevor is great, but really pricey.

Have not been to Five O'Clock in many moons, so no comment.

Milwaukee Steak House is very good, but the atmosphere is weak.

I have never felt ripped off at Eddie Martini's.  Great atmosphere, food, healthy drinks,  certainly not cheap, but you won't be disappointed.

Mader's?  For steak?  It's not even the best German restaurant in town, much less a steak joint.

Funny, when he asked, Karl Ratzsch's is the only one I could remember, but I didn't remember that as a steakhouse.  Thanks for the tips and I'll pass them along.

Sir

I had not seen the Butch's dirty dining news. Hate to say but not entirely surprising. Agree completely on Eddie Martini's being a great experience every time I go there. Well worth the dough IMO.

Not surprised, it's definitely got an old school atmosphere, but has always seemed a little dirty.

Glad they didn't do anything about this when it was DV-8's.

Thanks, everyone.  I passed along the recommendations.

BTW, y'all can take a pass on Joey Gerard's. It sucks sewer water.

IMO, highly overpriced with lousy service. So many other great steak choices in town. They'll either refine their act or go the way of the buffalo. Have enjoyed most Bartolotta's restaurants such as Lake Park Bistro, Bacchus, and their joint in Tosa. Even Rumpus Room is good for what it is. But, Joey Gerard's and Harbor House, which has a great venue, are awful.

My biggest gripe at Gerrard's was service. It was opening night but service was poor. Food was decent but way too many better options out there.
