All time MU bad boys
« on: July 03, 2007, 09:18:58 AM »
The Saunders thread got me thinking about players who had legal/morals problems at MU.  Unfortunately, the names don't always pop into my pea brain.

I seem to recall that Tom Copa had some trouble related to a kid that was skitching behind his car and had a pretty bad head injury.

I also recall some player getting pretty physical with a coed in one of the dorm elevators.  And was it Toone that had an auto theft charge?

I believe the Copa thing ended with a girl being paralyzed.

I believe you may be referring to Pops Sims having problems.

Also, Tyrone Baldwin was involved in a rather bad scuffle down the street from O'D's.

Joe Nethen .. IIRC, didn't he throw a chair or .. TV out a McCormick window?

Amusing story .. I lived in McCormick at the same time w/Nethen.  One day, I got into the lobby elevator and Nethen was coming up from the basement.  He had with him a large carpet roll, which perhaps, he'd ripped up from some floor somewhere.

I stepped in, and made the mental note that he wasn't wearing any shoes, and that it'd be a good idea not to step on him.

The elevator opened on the 3rd floor, people got in, and I stepped back on his toes.. 3-4 seconds went by, perhaps long enough for Nethen's slow brain to register "ouch"  and make this loud groan.  My short life flashed before my eyes ..   as the elevator doors began to shut, I scooted out to live another day.

WHEW.

While nothing concrete is really known (at least by me) there is all sorts of speculation around his transfer...plus i saw him at potawatami gambling when he was a freshman I know thats not a big deal but it is still "criminal" activity

Just off the top of my head, Zach McCall's name pops up.
I also remember John Polonowski telling me a story about Jarrod Lovette heaving a big jar of mayo out of his window at Humphrey Hall,(The Joe Nethan thing jogged my memory on that one), but Jarrod had other issues going on around the same time.  Also, can anyone fill me in on Terry Reason?  I know that he left the team, but don't recall the circumstances behind it.
Matt Mortensen is another name that comes to mind.  Did we ever figure out exactly what his situation was?

Reason punched out another player during practice.  Can't recall who, but Terrell Schlundt comes to mind (I apologize if it was not him).  Majerus kicked him off the team, and right before the press conference, had a change of heart - but stuck with the decision (can't recall exactly why).

Bo Ellis was caught in a car with pot (but I am not certain he was charged).  McGuire had him apologize to the fans at the first game.

How the hell is gambling at a legal, state-sanctioned casino "illegal" in any sense of the word?

The only thing I can think of is that he may have been underage--you have to be 21 to gamble at the Indian Casinos.

the key there WHEN HE WAS A FRESHMAN. Like I said it's not a major offense and not that big of a deal, but he was underage and gambling at the casino. That was just something I personally saw, the major reason I put him on the list was alll the speculation of the reasons for his transfer (drugs etc)

Greg Clausen if reported likely would have had an issue or two.

Did you know Clausen is playing for Albequerque in the NBDL?  I found that odd, I don't see Merritt on any roster anymore and he was argueably better than clausen...

Arguably???  A stiff pillow case was better than Clausen.  However, no I did not know that he was in the NDBL.  I know Merritt was there for a while but then ran into back troubles.  Guess I should start working out, I have a shot at the NDBL :)

Yeah, McCaskill and McCall were two that I can think of that were tied to rumors of doobie use.

I also know of the kid who was driving the car when Hutch got into the accident that shut his jaw and eventually his MU career. Nice kid, but the crowd wasn't overly positive.

Ya know who was a Dick? Dick Shaw. Dude couldn't STOP hitting on girls and crashing parties, displaying just overtly rude and crass behavior. At a party, he was like, "You don't know who I am?" HA!

'77, if we are lowering the bar to being a dick at parties than Wardle is right up there.  My friends and I were at a party where we overheard his conversation with/hitting on a chick who didn't know who he was.  It was the highest of unintentional comedy that included grand pronouncements like "You don't know who I am??  I'M BRIAN WADLE FOR GODSAKE" and "I am Marquette basketball".  Seriously, thought I was going to pee my pants listening to the exchange.  I will give him credit the girl was smoking hot, I would have tried the same thing. :)

I almost peed my pants reading that story to my wife (a Wardle devotee.)

If we're going dicks at parties we can through DJ on that list too. That kid is an arogant a-hole when it comes to parties. He was hitting on one of my friend and when she told him that she had a boyfriend he said "so, Im Dominic James, im going to be in the NBA baby" she proceeded to throw beer in his face which was entertaining...

I will second Wardle being a dick.

Polo was a big partier... but he was hilarious. Never made full use of his talents on the court, but he was hilarious off of it.

Harris, Olumna, John Mueller, Clausen, Cordell, Dwyane, Merritt were all pretty nice dudes in social situations. Some were better than others... but they were all pretty good. Harris was probably one of the nicest kids around. I had a couple of different classes with him and saw him a a bunch of parties. Very cool dude.

Oh and Marcus Jackson seemed like one of the scariest dudes on the face of the earth, but he was really nice.

Copa was actually a good guy.   His story was that, during a snowstorm, he was driving his car (a jeep, I think), some students were skitching along behind, a girl fell and suffered a severe head injury (IIRC).   Nothing untoward on his part, just bad luck.   Pops Sims beat up a former girlfriend.    I witnessed Joe Nethen asking for help putting batteries in a walkman.   Too complicated.
