According to prepbullseye's twitter, Jerrance Howard won't be on Groce's staff. I know many people see him as a great recruiting asset and an up and comer in coaching at his young age. Any way we can convince him to come to MU?

Some rando Illini fan on twitter speculating he goes to and NBA team with Kansas "lurking." He seems like a Big # guy, but he was an assistant under Billy G at TX A&M; anyone know if Buzz and him have a relationship? Looking at their resumes it looks like they may have overlapped at A&M for a year.

Seriously, would be a huge get. We'll have lots of competition.

U of I's website has him at A&M between 05 and 07. Buzz was there between 04 and 06 before leaving for UNO. So presumably they at least know each other fairly well.

Just like schollies, I don't see anyone coming in without someone going out. If Benford, Aki, or Monarch get a HC gig, I'd love Howard...especially Benford because he covers a lot of the same recruiting areas.

Calipari has already marked this territory for himself.

Would be a huge, huge get, but I agree with brewcity on this one

Obviously there has to be some practical limit on the number of coaches on a staff, but are there NCAA limits? I think its fairly certain that Benford will get a chance somewhere in the near future. If you have the chance to grab a  guy like Howard (for a substantial price) and "redshirt" him for a year, should we do it?

Haha good luck getting an extremely highly regarded, young, up upcoming assistant coach to agree to that crappy deal.

Ya, not really looking at it from Howard's perspective. But assuming he wanted a spot, we aren't really limited by the current size of our coaching staff as others have suggested. The point is well taken that we may not be attractive given the current configuration of our staff.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Best of luck to Howard wherever he winds up.

Don't be surprised if Pat Kelsey comes back into the business.

Pretty sure the NCAA limits teams to only 3 full-time paid assistants. That is to avoid something like Illinois (or whomever) a job to Robert Smith to assure Jabari Parker's signature...and then doing the same for the coaches of Nerlens Noel, Shabazz Muhammad, Theo Pinson, and Andrew Wiggins in the coming years.

Speaking of assistants, is there anyone still seriously considering a MU candidate?  Has Ohio contacted Tony, for example?

From what I heard, Howard was Weber's go-to guy for city recruiting. If Illinois is being criticized for not recruiting the city of Chicago that well, why is there so much hype arround the guy who was Illinois' city recruiting guru?  Am I missing something?

Jerrance made a lot of contacts in a short amount of time.

Illinois still pulled decent players almost every year from Chicago, but they are criticized for not pulling Anthony Davis, Jabari Parker, etc.

When Howard took Webster's place at Illinois, the CPS coaches said he had no Chicago connections as he was from Peoria (even though he played for Larry Butler in AAU). This is all about bowing down at the public altar.  Buzz and Benford have done it the right way...going in under the radar, developing relationships, being slective, just like Jerrance did. Still say UIC made a mistake not hiring him even though he is very young.

I would have taken Jerrance over Groce, but that's my opinion. More potential value out of Jerrance at UI than Groce.

Not to mention if Jerrance takes off like many think he can as a coach, UI would be his destination job.

It also holds down expenses, and that is also a very important consideration for college administrators.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Yes, you are.  Howard is among the most respected recruiting assistant coaches in the country.  Remember, he wasn't recruiting for himself as head coach.

Its a little early to criticize them on Jabari Parker.  Losing Jon Scheyer to Duke caused quite a ruckus.
