New Student Section Chant Idea

Good for you Joey. I'll also be hoping that students catch on to this and it works effectively.

Here's to hoping neither team scores within the first 10 seconds of the game, though...as the majority of the BC will either cheer or be upset pending on who scores, which may ruin the chant.

I'd love to see the cheer work... then DJO hit a 3 to see the confetti fly!!

If we're looking for something unique, or at least not a direct rip-off, are there any chants that were done back in the day that we no longer do that could be brought back? I'd need someone from a previous generation to comment here. There had to be some student section chants during the Maguire era, right?

The same student who ran a campaign to delcare himself the "Biggest Marrquette fan" on facebook, wants to do a cheer that he can lead and everyone else has to repete after him.   Why am I not shocked that he chose this chat.

MUGRAD2006 bumped a post earlier referring to cheering during the "Maguire era" and suggesting that he would "here crickets" in response.

Dude! (That's to prove how "hip" I am to the lingo!)  In the "Maguire era" we just cheered like crazy - for everything and anything.  We didn't need an organized chant.  Closest thing to a chant we had was about the band playing MU Rah Rah about 125 times per half.

Times change.  Students change.  If the students need something to fire them up, and Joey's chant is the answer, then by all means go for it.  Whatever works.  Just be there and be enthusiastic.  Enjoy the ride.  Great team.  Great seniors to honor.  Make some noise - and not just if the camera is on you.

My name is Joey Godziszewski and I wrote that letter sent out to all Fanatics.  All year I read this board and all I read about is how bad the student section is, and for the most part I agree.  However, with this being Senior Night, we want this to be an incredible atmosphere.  Bash the chant all you want, bash me all you want, I could care less.  I will be there tomorrow in the front row leading this chant.  If it doesn't work out then bash me all you want the rest of the season.  If it does work, you all need to shut the hell up.  This isn't the 70s and 80s anymore, we can't bring booze into the stadium and get hammered there.  Instead of complaining about what my fellow fanatics and I are trying to do, how about you start cheering and getting into the games when the team needs YOU!! Bring on Georgetown! I BELIEVE THAT WE WILL WIN !!!! WE ARE MARQUETTE !!

There's the response I expected.   I was there from 02-06, a proud time to be an MU fan.  I thought we were pretty rowdy and had a lot of fun, but we didn't have any organized chants either.  Socrplyr overlapped my time and said that he thought we were lame.  

I just think there's a bit of hindsight bias in all of this.  Maybe we can just all agree that we have a certain level of affinity for when we were at MU, and we should just hope to hear a packed crowd at the game tomorrow.  

I know I'll be getting tingles down the spine when the lineup is announced and a packed house starts to buzz.

What a novel idea! Pay attention to the game and go nuts with every good play and boo the sh*t out of the refs every call that goes against us no matter how blatantly correct it is. Not that difficult.

Funny how 3 students try to take initiative and start a new tradition for MU students and they get absolutely railed for it. So what if it's taken from another school...News Flash - ALMOST EVERYTHING DONE AT ANY SPORTING EVENT IS TAKEN FROM SOMEWHERE ELSE.

I can semi-understand the criticism of the timing, but at the same time, it's Senior Day. Not only Jae and DJO's last game, but the last game for many students (as a student) - there SHOULD be something special to get people more involved, interested, and most importantly, excited for the game...mainly because there has been NONE of the three at most games this year.

If you don't like it, fine...but don't criticize the idea when you have nothing better to bring to the table.

OK, I've been thinking about this for a bit today.

What is the reasoning behind doing these "coordinated" type of cheers?  Someone said they "helped" he basketball team.  Do they really?  I doubt it.  Does it get the student section more fired up and into the game?  Not sure about either.

I get the impression that its more about people thinking the student section "looking cool" when they are doing it.
