why is that Dreads are so much more popular among football players than basketball players? Jae has got the only serious dreads i can think of in NCAA or NBA, but i don't have enough fingers toes to count the famous guys that play the other sport. Any thoughts as to why this might be?

Silkk the Shaka

I read somewhere that there are way more Rastafarians in football than basketball.  The chilled out vibe is a nice dichotomy to their violent on-field personas.

dwaderoy2004

i just think there are a lot more football players.  and maybe because it provides extra cushioning for the head.

Marquette should do a promo item where they hand out "Jae Crowder dreads." That would get people to the game.

warriorchick

I think it's the sweat factor.   Basketball has much longer sustained periods of aerobic activity than football, and the guys perspire much more.  I am guessing that most guys would prefer not to have a hairstyle that can absorb a couple of quarts of sweat and would want able to rub one's head with a towel.

I just hope for the sake of those who have to hang around Jae that he has found a good way to wash that 'do after games and practicees.  :P
Have some patience, FFS.

Not for sure that the yellow sweatered vested, short haired wet cats would rock 'em.

That is a great idea and would be really cool if they did it.

Over the past few years I rember a few opponents.  Renaldo Balkman of South Carolina.  One of the players on Dayton--can't recall his name.  Perhaps you could throw Buycks in there--nowhere near Crowder in terms of length, but probably on the short list.  I'm sure there are a few more one could find with a bit of searching.   But, you're right, it does seem to be less prominent.

It could just be numbers--there are a lot more football players than basketball. You've got 50 or so on NFL rosters, and a scholarhsip limit of 85 on NCAA teams.  Meanwhile, the NBA limit is 15 and the NCAA is 13.

It also might be the fact that football players have helmets to keep hair out of their faces, whereas some basketball palyes might find it annoying to have that hair whipping around.

Didn't Kenneth Fareed (sp?) on Morehead St. have them?  They upset Louisville last year in the tourney.  Believe he plays for Denver now in the NBA.
