Not sure if this has been happening in the past but Todd sits on the bench without standing up and high fiving and talking to anyone else on the team during the game. Seems to have a flat attitude and very quiet. After the game was the first one off the court by far and immediately took his jersey off and walked alone. With playing 20 minutes and winning by 20 points, I would think that he would be in a better mood or at least shake off his 1-5 shooting night and celebrate a good win with his team. I could be overthinking this but just wanted to get any other opinions.

Surely you must be talking about Vander Blue

Blackhat

I've noticed it.  What can you do about it?   I'm not throwing him a party.

Hopefully he likes it here and thrives, I take his attitude to mean he's all business on the floor unless or until he rides out of town.

DCWarriors04

all that tells me is he is all business...who cares, as long as he is happy at Marquette.

Buzz has mentioned it during the early part of the season, Mayo's demeanor hardly ever changes.  He doesn't get too high or too low - all business.  He looks like a cold-blooded assassin out there when he's hot.  It also makes him look disinterested when he's not playing all that well but I'm 99.9999% sure that's just how he carries himself at all times, nothing to read into.

I think you need to get with the MUScoop program!

Sorry, I meant to say he was probably dissing the whole team while at the same taking his privileged status as an athlete for granted and rubbing it in everyone's face on campus.  My bad!

mu_hilltopper

I've noticed Mayo's .. disinterest .. as well.   It's concerning in that, he's a guy MU will be building the team around in his next 3 years .. can't have him unhappy, we need him here.

MUFC9295

In all seriousness, does anyone here have a good read on the kid?  Regarding Todd, I wonder if he's a "well my brother..." kind of guy that is 1) proud of his sibling, but 2) alienates himself.  As I touched on in other posts, we are fortunate to have him now and for, hopefully, 3 more brilliant years.  But does he have a bubble around himself?

He also looks that way when he's burying threes all night.  I really don't think it's anything to be concerned about.

I'd say he holds himself to a very high standard and he only wants to be great. I saw in an interview after the Wisconsin game where he didn't think he played well. I'm sure he was upset with his 1-5 today or whatever it was.

PaintTouches

The few times I interviewed to him you get the sense that he is just not a people person at all. Very shy but very humble.

He definitely idolizes his brother though. I was asking him little filler questions for some graphics and he responded to the question, "Who will end up as the greatest ever MJ or Bron?" Todd answers, "OJ Mayo," and repeats it when I question him again.

I wouldn't worry about his demeanor though. As some have said in previous posts, he is all business all the time.

That is how I would view it.  But let's not start another thread where we worry and fret over someone's sideline demeanor.

QuetteHoops

I've actually noticed him being the opposite of what guys are saying in most games. I've seen him be the only one standing on the bench cheering and he is always at the front of the bench and sometimes in between the coaches. I think it was the Pitt game where he and buzz were the only ones standing on the bench for a whole defensive possession cheering the guys on...It seems to me like he is a fierce competitor with an all business approach, he had the same face after dunking the ball last night that he did when he was blocked and turned it over...

I noticed him do that on the first two possessions of the second half against Louisville. It was only he and Buzz standing and encouraging a strong stop from the five on the court.

LAZER

I remember he got a real bad foul called against him in the Pitt game and someone else, maybe Crowder or Cadougan started complaining to the ref and Mayo looked unfazed by the call and told them to basically shut up which I thought was great.  I think he has a goal, which is probably to play in the NBA, and he's all business about it, you don't get to his level by being disinterested. That goes for Gardner as well.

MerrittsMustache

Though I wasn't paying particularly close attention to his bench demeanor, watching Mayo in the actual game, I couldn't help think that he looked a little lethargic and out of it. A buddy of mine actually said the same thing. Perhaps he simply wasn't feeling well.

This thread can't be real life....seriously?

Montana Warrior

Let's get real.  Todd is a 19 year-old kid on an 18th ranked team in one of the best BB conferences in the country where he is getting 20+ minutes a game as a freshman.  There are ups and downs in any players games but this MU team and Buzz's style of BB fits this kid's talents perfectly and I think he knows it.

swoopem

When was the last time you guys ever did anything competitve? Sometimes you get pissed at yourself and dont want to hear about it from anyone else because you know the mistakes that you made and you know your better than that. The dude is fine, stop trying to find stuff to complain about.

Agreed!

Was thinking when reading the first post...UGH. Not this again.  Why don't we just have a thread dedicated to the amateur sports psychologists and tea leaf readers.

Sure, players might play well, or not so well, but it's most important that we examine their DEMEANOR.

ringout

How does he return slaps of five?  This is important in evaluating a players overall contribution to the team.

ZiggysFryBoy

Jake Thomas doesn't hand towels out nearly as well as Frozen-A did.

(Good to see Frozen-A in Dick Strong's seats last night)

Skatastrophy

He's a freshmen.  All freshmen are trying to figure out who they're supposed to be personally and academically, much less how they're supposed to fit into the team.  He'll figure it out :)
