Would Buzz promise Phillip playing time his first year?

Buzz promises, as always, that you have a shot at playing if you work hard and beat out the other guys on the roster.  Buzz has no problem playing freshmen.  He also doesn't have a problem yanking them immediately if they start playing like freshmen.

I honestly don't think Buzz would promise Shabazz Muhammad or Jabari Parker playin time. He seems very consistent with players getting only what they earn, from practice gear to playing time to scholarship renewals. No matter who you are, I don't expect Buzz to make it easy on anyone, nor should he. That's why certain recruits are attracted to Marquette (JA) and others aren't. I'd rather have kids here that want to be here and want to work for what they get. Vander and Mayo have shown you can earn PT as a frosh, if that's not good enough, you're probably better off going somewhere else.

Scout Paul Biancardi is really high on him.  He singled Nolan out as a player to watch outside the ESPN top 100.  He believes Nolan can effectively play all 3 frontcourt positions and will be an "immediate asset" for whichever school he chooses.

The only thing holding Philip Nolan back from being a great player is Philip Nolan.

I agree. Nolan is an excellent talent. He's long, athletic, can shoot and block shots with the best of them, but isn't always consistent. I think in the right program, he could develop into a phenomenal player, and Buzz's tough love approach might be just what he needs to really give that effort every day. I'm sure he's familiar enough with Boot Camp that if he is still interested in Marquette, he's prepared to put work in. I'd love to see Nolan in Blue & Gold.

Haha, I was going to comment on that. I would promise anything under the sun that was in accordance with NCAA rules. Literally anything.

You would. I would. I'm just not sure Buzz would. I get the impression Buzz isn't really in the business of coddling his players and potential players. I really think he'd rather have someone that he knows will work their ass off and have a bit of a chip on their shoulder than a guy who expects it all to be handed to him and walks around like he's god's gift (no, not Achiuwa). It's clear Buzz has a good eye for talent, but I think for him, work ethic is just as, if not even more, important when it comes to bringing guys in.

Besides, if you're a Muhammad or Parker, you shouldn't need assurances you'll be playing. You should have the confidence that you are good enough to play now and will do so. And maybe even the humility to take a seat when there's a lesson to be taught.

Goose

I hope we sign him. Local kid that wants to be here is big for program. I'd worry about 2013 next year.

If these two needed a promise of playing time to consider a school, then they are not that good.  They should believe they are going to come in a win the role in practice without too much effort.   All they would need is an assurance that the coach does not have a philosophy of not playing Freshman because they are Freshman.  That is easy enough to figure out by looking at the stat sheet.

So no such conversation needs to take place.

You mean like when Buzz coddled Gardner during recruitment?  lol
Quote"I knew that it would be an adjustment for him to learn to work the way that we demand you work," Williams said. "And so I was really critical of him in front of his parents, in front of his coach. 'Mean' would be the nicest thing you could say about how I recruited him because I wanted to see how he would respond."

Williams isn't looking for flashy one-and-done athletes who think they are bigger than the program. He simply won't recruit that way because that's not the kind of person he is. He wants players who understand the value of hard work and are willing to put in the time to become players that reflect how he runs his program.

What is peoples take on Otule's situation. Is there any thought as to whether or not he will be granted another year? When does that get decided upon, next fall?

Bad idea, really bad idea. Why?, you can't have the tail wag the dog. Furthermore, that implies more promises are being made to succeeding classes.

Buzz has stated that Otule will play a 6th year.

My understanding is MU cannot even apply to the NCAA for a medical waiver until the season is over.  Technically he is free to come back this season.

GGGG

He cannot apply until his eligibility is used up.  However, since the decision is made by the conference, my guess is that they got the unofficial word from the BE that he would be eligible.  I would put it at a 99% certainty.

Tomorrow is Seton Hall ... What does MU, Seton Hall and Nolan have in common?

Tugg Speedman

Since no one took the bait ... Philip Nolan went to St. Benedict Prep in New Jersey last year and was the recruit sitting in the hall for an hour after the Seton Hall game.  Remember MU lost and they held a team meeting about it.  The media was really pissed about it.

Yes, I remember hearing about the one hour meeting in the locker room after the loss.  Nolan had to wait outside.  It seems like Nolan really wants to play for MU.  Hope we can find a way to sign him.

Earl Tatum

With Nolan and Durley, if he comes, two 6-10 players. WOW is Buzz seeing the light?

Buzz has never not "seen the light."  He wants basketball talent.  He's not going to recruit height for the sake of height.

With Philip Nolan back in Milwaukee, and the Seton Hall game in Milwaukee this year, I hope that you're not suggesting a compete repeat of last year this year in Milwaukee.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

Quote from: muguru
No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.
