Oh if we lose tonight it'll be all about senior night

Forgot about that. Damn, I was expecting a win tonight!

The team could be concerned over a Shaka departure in the upcoming weeks and it might cause problems the rest of the way.

🫣Shaka to UW-Madison extension. Ugh

Line moved from -7 to -9...if we lose tonight...Vegas was in on it.

I think I'm joking...

And on a side note...if it hasn't already been mentioned...funny article about Kam and Jop in the JS today.  Jop's sense of humor is great...

"But later, as Joplin was detailing their relationship, Jones wandered by and Joplin spoke a little louder to make sure his roommate felt the needle.

"He's really emotional about competition," Joplin said. "Just look at him."

Shaka has to be feeling the Wardle heat and who would blame him for making a move.

Last chance THIS year

No worry. Tomorrow we can get a fresh start with March Malais.

Crean turned down Illinois after the FF run in 2003. A few years later, after bombing out (again) in the tourney, he could leap to Indiana fast enough.

The only place a FF coach goes is the NBA (see Brad Stevens). But I don't see Shaka as an NBA coach.

(Yes, Roy Williams jumped from Kansas to UNC, but he is the exception that proves the rule. His circumstances in making that jump were unique.)

I thought Crean turned down Indiana first and accepted the second time they came to him.

I think when a coach is most vulnerable to taking another offer from Marquette is after some significant success, but then a down year or two...they worry about being able to replicate that success again at the current school, and also that their stock may be starting to sink with any more down years. They feel they need to strike while the iron is hot. There isn't that pressure RIGHT after a Final Four year, it is a few years later and no similar success.

This happened to both Crean and Buzz. Crean went 5 more years after 2003 and failed to win another tournament game. People were starting to murmur if he was just a beneficiary of D Wade. Buzz had only one down year but it was a 17-15 year and the cupboard was empty next year. The Elite 8 and Sweet 16s were starting to tarnish. Time to find the next big thing.

The risk is not Shaka leaving after a deep run this year. The risk is a deep run this year, followed by mediocre success for the next couple years. That is when coaches leave. Psychologically, it makes sense.

This is obviously not true at a mid major. A coach will jump to a much better deal right away after a great season. But Marquette is a really good gig. A coach will only jump if they feel their prime window for another great deal is closing.

I don't think that happened to Buzz. I think that & the "new big east won't be good" was an excuse.
Retire Terry Rand's jersey!

I disagree. He went 17-15 and knew the cupboard was empty in 2014-2015.

I disagree. He went 17-15 and knew the cupboard was empty in 2014-2015.

Alternatively, he just brought in a top 10 recruiting class and had another (on paper) great one coming in.

If he think it was bare then he really really really didn't believe in Juan, Steve & Derrick to develop Duane, JJJ, Deonte, Dawson & Ahmed Hill, Sandy Cohen, Marial Shayok and Satchel Pierce

Duane was pretty damn good RS freshman year & grad transfer year.

We know JJJ had some ups & downs.

Deonte ended up in the NBA.

Juan ended up in the NBA.

Hill & Pierce both followed him to VT so he at least believed there was something to them.

Shayok was extremely impressive in college.

Dawson, Taylor, Derrick, Sandy we all know what happened and are who they are are: mid major players.

Essentially if he truly believed it was bare then he didn't believe in his talent evaluations and/or his ability to develop which makes him no different than Wojo.
Retire Terry Rand's jersey!

"The cupboard was bare" is an urban legend.

The record talk ignores a lot of the background that (justifiably or not) messed with his happy.  I am impatiently waiting for tip off tonight as well, but don't really know why we are back on this.

Buzz had half of the athletic department ready to quit, and was at odds with the administration. There was no way he could stick around. Either he left or would be termed, or you have a lot of university staff turnover. Lose lose lose.

The only thing the Crean and Buzz departures had in common was surprising fans.

Crean also surprised his team with that ESPN press conference. What a dick.
