Very thorough explanation of rankings over at PTs which sadly makes me think that we might be a tad overrated in the AP poll. Good news is we can now probably survive an 0-2 week still ranked. Realistically we could easily be 1-3 in the BE, UL could have made one of those 3 game ending layups, the UW game, etc., however good TEAMS figure out how to win these close games and use luck in their favor. That said sure would like to see an easy blowout of someone soon.

The good news is that we have underperformed. We're better than we have played to date. Ed, Charty can definitely play better this year. Hoping Jamal elevates things.

And Markus still hasn't scored 50 in regulation, he's shooting under 50% from 2 on the year... gonna be great when he finally puts it all together!

Marquette was ranked 7 in the end of season poll that year.

Based on resume, we are absolutely a top-15 team. I had us at 12 in my last S Curve and think it's tough to make much of a case for the teams behind us on the basis of resume.

Does that mean we've played like the 12th best team in the country? No. We've certainly had some luck in winning 3 OT games and two more by single digits. When we look bad, we look really bad, losing by 9+ every time. That's why there's a difference between what a metric like Pomeroy measures and resume based analysis like the NET.

Based on resume, we're in the 10-15 range. Based on metrics, it's probably 25-35. The truth is probably somewhere in between.

I like wins above bubble, which rewards teams that win games, based off of a schedule strength. You can really see who has padded their win totals against bad teams (sup @teamcoachbuzz). We are #17 in that right now.

Not sure about Markus, but I have a suspicion that both Hausers may have another gear they haven't hit yet.  I think that surgery had an effect on Sam and hopefully he gets better, and I think Joey gets a little better each day.

Agree that Sam has another gear.   If he starts being more aggressive getting his own shot and making them like we have seen before then we are going to talke it to another level offensively as a team.  Should have been up by more than 20 points in the the first half against SH if he had hit more of the shots he normally makes.  Throw in Joey getting better as well and the blowouts will come.

MU82

Maybe it was just my eyes seeing what they wanted to see, but I thought Sam looked a step quicker and more athletic the last couple of games. For example, in one sequence against SH, he displayed really nice lateral quickness and perfectly timed his jump to block a shot. Reminded me of freshman and early soph Sam.

I hope I wasn't seeing things!

I agree '82! A couple of times recently, when Sam was on defense, I said to myself: Yes, that's the footwork I remember!

Hmm, maybe I'm out of it, but I hadn't seen "Wins against bubble" before.  Found WAG being calculated regularly at the Yale bracketology site, if you have a more official place for it please share.

I remember one play in particular where he had the ball near the top of the key and blew by a defender for a pretty nice up layup where he switched hands.

More of that from Sammy por favor.

Yessir. That was sweet. Need him to be a little more aggressive within the framework of the offense.

The minute I saw that, I knew I wanted more. Getting a dynamic Sam Hauser going would be great.

We are definitely due for a Sam blackout game.

That's why it's nice we are 3-1 already. He hasn't gotten hot.

Hoping since him and Joey were both off vs SHU we might make it rain tonight

The thing I'm looking forward to the most is when Joey goes off one game and some opposing fan inevitably says, "Wait, you mean we have 3 more years of Hauser to deal with?"

Thank you Bo Ryan.

MU82

It would be totally cool if both our Warriors and the Fightin' Wrights go unbeaten from now until our NMD matchup on Feb. 9. If so, both teams probably be in the top 10 (or darn close).

We kick their butts to move into first place (due to head-to-head), stay hot, and go into Philly and womp 'em there.

Lucky for them it might not be 3 more.

Unlucky for them it means a couple years of Joey being a beast

FWIW 26 voters has NC State ahead of us in their rankings. Even the teams behind us losing helps a good deal in the rankings

Especially since UNC was only 10 votes ahead at 13 and Auburn only 1 vote ahead.

TAMU, Knower of Ball

Since our game is on Sunday, the votes might be in before we play so we can start speculating on next weeks rankings.

I think a double digit loss at Pitt guarantees that #11 Florida State will be dropping below us.

#9 Virginia Tech got blown out by 23 but it was on the road to #4 Virginia. I think they stay ahead (unless the lose to Wake Forest on Saturday) but I could see voters judging them a little harsher. They beat Purdue on a neutral floor this season but that is likely the only tourney team they had played to date. Beaten up on a really weak schedule. This was the first true test and they got destroyed.

A sub .500 Boise State team was 4 seconds away from knocking of #10 Nevada. One of the Martin twins hit a go ahead three to win the game. They won't get dropped for winning a close game, but I think the next time they lose they may fall extra far. They've had some very mediocre performances against a very weak schedule.

Got some breathing room behinds us as #17 NC State and #18 Ole Miss both lost. NC State on the road to a .500 Wake Forest team and Ole Miss at home to decent LSU squad.

I do know, Newsie is right on you knowing ball.

TallTitan34

As a previous poster mentioned it also helps when teams below us lose.

Example:  The only guy who has Florida ranked has them at 25. In theory he could finally move them out with their loss last night and replace them with Marquette who he doesn't have ranked.

The guy I'm referencing won't do this because he follows kenpom but it's possible others do in a similar situation.
