Marqus Howard

By NBA D League team Tulsa 66ers. He was picked 5th in the second round.

Good for him.

Congrats to Dwight...hope he keeps grinding and grinding and grinding...as I could see him getting a stint in the NBA if he works his tail off...could follow the same path as Jerel...(I see them as very similar players), the issue for Dwight was he is more of a "2" than a "1" and played out of position all year.  Definitely think he's better off the ball as a "2"

Yeah, but he's a little on the small size to be a 2 in the NBA.  He's Ben Gordan's size without Gordan's shot.

PuertoRicanNightmare

Buycks greatest asset is he had a tendency to make unexpectedy huge plays/shots in big games. That's a nice attribute, but I'm not sure about his NBA chances.

Same tendency to make careless/sloppy plays too.

Dwight was a decent college player.  Would make some tough shots.  But no way is he a NBA player.  Poor ball handling skills, not enough size for 2 guard, bad decision making, etc.

Not taking anything away that he accomplished at MU.  Just don't see him in the show.

Did you just compare Buycks to McNeal? McNeal is the leading scorer in MU history and an excellent defender. Buycks probable had one 20 point game at MU, and couldn't guard anybody. Buycks in the NBA??? WOW!!
Q: What's the difference between Bo Ryan and God?
A: God doesn't think he's Bo Ryan!!

I see your point.   ;D  I do wonder if Jerel was forced to play the point in his time at MU (and if he only had 2 years at MU) how drastically different his stats/performance might have been.  Jerel was great while at MU, but it could be argued his defense dropped off gradually each year, as his offense improved.

I see Buycks as having a lot of potential, and a lot of the puzzle pieces it takes to make it...its just a matter of putting them all together on a consistent basis.  But yes, all in all...a big stretch for Dwight to make the NBA - but getting drafted to the NBDL does say something as to scouts perceptions of him...beyond what his stats may have reflected/merited while at MU.

He was completely overated as a defender.

Grats Buycks!  That's seriously awesome that he got picked up professionally :D

Oh lord, don't let willie warrior see this thread  :-X

Buycks at his best had enough promise that he could be a fringe NBA player. I thought as much early this year when he was playing out of his mind. Sadly, his season spiraled downward and he didn't look nearly as promising at the end of the year.

He has a few solid skills. He's a good shooter from range, is athletic, can get to the rim, and has decent length. However he doesn't particularly finish at the rim with authority and defensively was never a standout. I could see him eventually developing to the point where he got a look or two. I'm not saying a star by any means, but he could be an 11th or 12th man, getting spot time. He's not there yet, and it would likely take a few years of work to get to that point, but with his shooting and athleticism, it's not an impossible dream.

I would tend to agree.  McNeal got a ten day callup with New Orleans and did not play one minute.  That is the extent of his NBA career to date and will in all probability be his last.  I am sure Buycks is elated to be drafted by the D league in the second round, but realistically his chances are slim.

Wish him the best of luck, he was a good representative for the team.

Your spelling is overrated.

Dwight will drop 30 on those NBDL clowns

Like in the Lville game last year...  :o  That game still makes me sick.

I'd have thought Buycks would have a better chance of being drafted into the military, but good luck to him anyway.

bamamarquettefan

Buycks is physical enough that he could sneak in as a 2 - while I'm afraid jerel just isn't.

I disagree completely on defense - I believe vander and Dwight were by far our top two on-ball defenders at guard. I sat on the floor for the duke game last year, and Dwight looked strong and quick enough to match up against the beat back court in the country, including the no. 1 pick in the draft.

Clearly it drained him to have to focus on running the offense over the course of they year, but while he does not compare to the great jerel McNeal as a college player, he has a much better chance to land on an NBA Bench.
The www.valueaddsports.com analysis of basketball, football and baseball players are intended to neither be too hot or too cold - hundreds immerse themselves in studies of stats not of interest to broader fan bases (too hot), while others still insist on pure observation (too cold).

Wasn't Dwight going ham this summer at the pro am? Obviously the skill level doesn't compare to the NBA but are we saying that at MU he was asked to do things to not allow him to go off. I know thats probably the best way to go at it to win, but I feel in the NBADL he won't be to structured and be able to go off.  My moneys on him all day at the playground.

As far as unexpected plays.. final layup up and under McGee at Pitt.

You can say that again. I think he had a brain aneurysm against Villanova in the '09 BET. First an ill advised shot up one and then getting stuck in cement on the other end. Horrible.

I also recall McNeal being on the receiving end of one of the worst ankle breakings I've ever seen at the Bradley Center. I believe it was also against Villanova in the game in which James got hurt.

Didn't James get hurt against UConn?

Yes.  James was the better on-ball defender.  McNeal was the type of all-or-nothing drives who drives me up a wall.
