Yes.  James was the better on-ball defender.  McNeal was the type of all-or-nothing drives who drives me up a wall.

I agree that James was the better on-ball defender, and frankly, better overall defender.  McNeal took chances on defense and had good anticipation off the ball.  He would get steals off of this and lead to his reputation.  Of course, you tend to forget, outside of the games like Nova, when he got beat by peaking or anticipating.

Jerel was a really good and absolutely fearless player, but his numbers (and because of that his status with many MU fans) were skewed to the positive side more than any Warrior in my memory. He got big minutes from day one because there was no one ahead of him. His defense looked better than it was because DJ's ability on the ball versus the opponents best ballhandler allowed him to overplay his man. And his basketball IQ was low (defensive and offensive brain cramps at the end of games, countless rejections following ill advised, head down drives to the hoop, etc.
