You would figure at least one of the services would have MU as a /mentioncontender for Cleare, but not so.

Lets see who shows up for Midnight Madness.

Almost everything in that post is not true. More than just Maryland fans think we are the heavy favorite. Cleare is from Texas and has visited Maryland twice. We were his only visit during the summer and he said he wasn't looking to take anymore visits. Every interview with him is him talking about Maryland non stop. Furthermore we have hardly ever heard Marquette mentioned as the competition for him even early on. He was interviewed by a national writer on the 247 network at AAU nationals and he was talking about us like he was already committed. That whole McGary and Cleare theory is makes no sense considering McGary is a 4 and Cleare is a 5 combined with the fact that we have ZERO good bigs on our roster. Cleare will be committed before McGary decides anything anyway.

Not trying to be a dick but thinking that you are in good shape for Cleare or right behind us is nothing more than extreme wishful thinking.

Follow the Under Armour connections and you can follow the interest.

Well, Cleare put us in his final 7. I take that as more of an indicator than anything else.

dmjt4160

He doesn't have any official list or "final 7".

bilsu

I am not saying he will go to MU, but until he commits he is not a lock for Maryland. In my opinion the longer he waits, the more Maryland is in trouble.

Yet you know that he's a lock for Maryland? Evan Daniels was told otherwise three weeks ago, and I've seen nothing to the contrary since.

Under School Lists: "Shaquille Cleare mentioned Maryland, Texas, Baylor, Texas A&M, Marquette, Kansas and Florida."

dmjt4160

Ok so he "mentioned" 7 schools and you were among them, that does not say Cleare has cut his list to 7 schools. Still he hasn't visited anywhere outside of the Texas schools, Arizona and Maryland and doesn't have any plans on visiting anywhere else at the moment.

He gets back from the Bahamas in a few days. Id be surprised if you dont hear of a commitment or a planned official visit to Maryland by the end of August/first week of September.

GGGG

I like to be positive brew, but it seems fairly obvious to me that he's not going to be here.

I'm with bilsu. Listen, I guarantee nothing either way, but if he was 100% on Maryland, why would he need another visit, and why did he go out of country rather than committing? If he does go there, I agree with dmjt that you'll hear something quickly. If it gets to mid-September and he hasn't said, there's a decent chance he's moved on.

All that said, he clearly hadn't made a choice 3 weeks ago. You don't have a list of 7 schools if you know exactly where you want to go.

bamamarquettefan

Not to be polyanna again, but we have had a couple in recent history commit without visiting, haven't we? I wouldn't rule someone out because they hasn't visited yet.
The www.valueaddsports.com analysis of basketball, football and baseball players are intended to neither be too hot or too cold - hundreds immerse themselves in studies of stats not of interest to broader fan bases (too hot), while others still insist on pure observation (too cold).

You called the Faust to Maryland commit for awhile, so I'm not gonna doubt you here with Cleare.  However, what is the motivation for coming to another schools message board to simply give them bad news?!!

Good question! I was extremely bored, googled Shaquille Cleare, this popped up and I couldnt help myself. Sorry lol. Knowing recruiting Cleare will probably announce an official to Marquette in a week and I'll look like a moron. :shrug

Yeah - No worries - you post with a reasonable tone, etc...was just curious...as it does feel like a bit of a kick in the balls to hear bad news on the recruiting front (which it seems you deliver here).

Any word from out there how Faust is adapting, playing in summer pick-up games with team?  I assume you are pleased with the Turgeon hiring?

This sounds exactly like the company line last summer about Nick Faust. How'd that end?

Yea pleased with Turgeon and ecstatic with the assistants he brought on. This year is going to be horrendous so Faust will get tons of pt and a chance to score plenty. We only have 8 scholarship players left and only 3 players above 6'6". One is coming off of leg surgery/rehab and has never played in college, one was a marginal at best 3th big in the rotation for us last year as a sophomore and one is a 6'10" 210 pound JUCO transfer Euro stringbean who can block shots but hasnt shown an ability to do anything else. So basically the guards will be chucking plenty of shots. Haven't heard much on the team though this summer, aside from some pickup games and stuff.

What are you guys looking at for the rest of 2012? One big? Seems like you're more than well stocked at guard/wing with the last two classes. Ill do my best not to bring any bad news anymore but I dont think well be after any of the same kids other than Cleare for 2012 and 2013.

It's all good as far as the news you deliver - even if it does feel like a kick in the balls at time - hearing an "outsiders" perspective does give insight to our board - even if it is stuff we don't want to hear.

Think Turgeon was a great hire for MD.  As for MU - we went really hard after Gabe York a PG/SG combo, and felt we were gonna land him before he decided on Arizona - and also are going hard on Kris Dunn another highly regarded PG - tho due to our pursuit of York and feeling he was gonna commit - we may have lost out on Dunn.

If we can't land Dunn (even though well stocked at guard), we have offers out to some 4's and 5's - most of whom are 2.5-3.5 star players.  Think ideally the staff would want a 4 or 5 if it can't land Dunn.

While I think Auguste or Mbargorba would be solid gets, I wouldn't be surprised to see us go hard for Ray Lee. He's moving up into some top-100 lists and sounds like a more accomplished Reggie Smith. Buzz clearly places a lot of value on the point, and after having success with minimal size, I wouldn't be surprised to see him risk waiting for a big until 2013 with the mindset that Gardner can start for a year and his replacement will be a sophomore when he has to start.

I agree brew.  If I were a betting man, I think we miss on Cleare and Dunn, land Lee, then go after bigs in the late period.  Would love those two guys, but my less than skilled attempt at reading the tea leaves has me feeling like we're finishing second for both of those guys.

I think we finish this class with a PG and big...both best available.

I'm not sure we still get two more. If it's Dunn and Cleare, I think so, otherwise, I don't think we oversign. We have 4 schollies available, and already have filled 3 with TJ Taylor, Steve Taylor, and Ferguson. I think we get one out of the remaining targets, and only go for a fifth if someone transfers mid-season.

I don't think Ferguson is going to suit up for MU. Just a hunch.

It's true we haven't heard anything in awhile, I'm still hoping for him to come in. Not the tallest player, but has good length to be a nice 2-3 option. Not sure how his summer went, seems the early commits often don't get as much summer ink because fewer people are focusing on where they'll end up.

I think I'll assume he will be here until we have any evidence to suggest otherwise.

Or I could just say I have a hunch that your hunch is wrong.

+1  no hunches.

Clam Crowder

I have no evidence, I just see how many people we are on right now and if we are to oversign I see him being the odd man out. We all know Buzz is capable of it we have seen it the last 2 years! I rather have this happen than lose a player on our current roster. If we are to get Mbargorba and Lee I see Ferguson being the odd man out.

I'd be very surprised if Ferguson DOESN't suit up for MU.  He's a Buzz player all the way.  No way the staff would oversign with Lee being chosen over Ferguson.  Not a chance.
