In Article about Washington's non-conference schedule...

"Washington will also travel to St. Louis, the school where head coach Lorenzo Romar last worked. The trip will also serve as a trip home for senior guard Scott Suggs. It's common practice for teams to arrange for out-of-state players to have at least one game in their home-state or near their hometown as a reward, of sorts."

If so, Barro got shafted--no games in Senegal during his career at Marquette.

Spotcheck Billy

I recall Coach K does this at Duke but haven't heard of too many other schools that make this a normal practice

Dr. Dunkenstein

Kansas State played at Loyola (Chicago) last season, close to senior guard Jacob Pullen's hometown (Maywood, IL).

Except when K/dook schedule their games they are always at a neutral site.....not truly a road game...they have a terrible record in true road games and avoid them at all costs.... which is why they don't do well in the NCAAs when they have to play outside North Carolina.

PickNRoll

We did a home and home series with Stetson in the late 70s-early 80s so Oliver Lee could play in his home town of DeLand, Florida.

Yeah, outside of that pesky little 2010 NCAA tourney run when they won 6 straight games, all outside North Carolina.

But seriously, I do really like this practice. I know UNC gives every scholarship player a "homecoming" game, so we can expect to see Tokoto playing locally in the next few years, probably against UW-M. I think with Buzz expanding our recruiting so much this would be a really nice thing to do for the kids. In addition, it would let us play some road cupcakes that would be better for the RPI than just playing all those games at home. Not sure if Buzz would be able to do it for every scholarship player, especially with him casting such a wide recruiting net of late, but I think doing it when possible would be a nice idea.

apples to oranges - no one plays a true road game in the NCAA tourney

Marquette played a game at Oakland Mich. So Chris Grimm could have a game near his hometown. I recall Crean  trying to do this.

Did'nt Nova play at the Wells Fargo Center in Philly last year or the year before? To me that was a true road game for their opponent that year. No different than St Johns playing in the Garden for the Big East Touenament.

Well you've got to bend over backwards to make The Reaper happy.

UWM? Get UNC on Marquette's schedule as a home-and-home! Chapel Hill can't be all that far from where Davonte grew up in Virginia.

Well, the distance equivalent would be like UNC scheduling a "return home" game for JPT at Notre Dame.

I wish we would have scheduled Minnesota so that Ammo and Trevor wouldn't have left.

I'd love it, would be perfect for us to play a roadie there this year (DJO) and then host them in 2012 for Tokoto. But my guess is UW-M will get it. Looking at the teams UNC picks for these games, it's usually mid-majors or high-majors in decline. That description fits Milwaukee more than Marquette.

MU also played at Valpo for DJ.

Is that really the case?  Richmond is not even close to Valpo.  Ball State or some school in Indianapolis would have been more appropriate.

You have to wonder how many of these games were scheduled with a "homecoming" mentality. Some of these had to be coincidental, while others are a little too far-fetched to qualify like the game @Valpo.

I agree Nova caught a huge break then and hopefully the NCAA doesn't let this happen too often

It's spelled "forward"
"Half a billion we used to do about every two months...or as my old boss would say, 'you're on the hook for $8 million a day come hell or high water-.    Never missed in 6 years." - Chico apropos of nothing

I bet the Tokoto family would happily make that trip  ;)

If this is a practice, it didnt work out for Crowder, Fulce, Butler, Bradley, or EWill, as Marquette has not played in Houston area, for many years--the last time was a CUSA game at U of Houston.
C'mon Buzz throw A&M a bone after turning down the coaching gig, and come to Toyota Center for an AM/MU BB game. I've been starved from seeing my team in Htown for too long...and it would help your recruiting here, too.
I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.
