Why does no one understand that you undermine your own value as a fan by making this "they get paid, rabble rabble" argument?

By that measure, you have the right to boo, etc because you pay for a ticket.  Yet then thats all you are, is a stockholder in the team by way of having bought in financially.  The notion that the players owe you for your investment and hence can't complain about you as a fan while you can complain about them as a player is woefully misguided. It undermines your nonfinancial investments to the point that you pay for the right to participate. Thats not how it works.
You pay for the right to watch in person.  You earn the right to feel participatory by watching through the bad times and by suffering and celebrating with a team - all in support.  What if I buy two tickets, do I get to boo more?  The financial investment is not what creates the community that is the basic reason we all flock to a thing like MU basketball.  If you were the only MU fan, would it be as rewarding? Of course not.  When you boo, you become nothing but a free rider, expecting other fans to carry the supportive weight until you get to come back in and jump on the winning bandwagon.

I'm also of the opinion that it is the struggle that defines someone as a true fan. If you aren't there for the suffering, then you simply can't participate in the celebration to the extent that someone who stayed all in for the lean years can.   And when you boo, or more importantly, feel entitled to start booing this team, you choose to give up on them at the very time that should be defining you as an MU college basketball fan.

Analogies to the professional world are so off target... I do not consider myself a "client" of MU basketball anymore than I was a "client" of the University when I was a student.  If you believe that, you have an incredibly cynical view of what a University is.  That imagery so undermines the entire idea of being a fan of something...

It would be a variation of comedian's revenge.

(Is The Brew Bayou still around?)

LOL

Not sure if the Brew Bayou is still around or not. I was down in that area a couple weeks back, but the girlfriend didn't want coffee, so I didn't walk to that side of the AMU. But I planned on getting down there this weekend, I'll try to remember to check ;)

To steal the concept from Buzz, Masterr has had his bottle tipped as an MU fan and discovered it is filled with s#!t
"A Plan? Oh man, I hate plans. That means were gonna have to do stuff. Can't we just have a strategy......or a mission statement."

That's false, just because I boo does not mean that I am no suffering with the team, it only means that i am upset with they way they are playing. Say what you will I was there and i saw a team quit and so did most of the student section. Just because I boo doesnt mean I hate the team. Booing should also motivate a team to play better. Are all of you on this board saying that you have never boo'd your team. I understand what some of you are saying that adults shouldnt boo college kids, but I am attending Marquette now so does that mean I can boo them? I think so. If no one ever boo'd their team or got mad at their team then your team would be, or like, the Chicago Cubs.

Masterr73

sorry I wrote that wrong

Just admit it, you were dating a hella fine chick, and she dumped your candy ass for a ball player.

Constant booing of Dominic James??  Scott Merritt?  Do others recall this?  I certainly don't.
There were some boo-birds for DJ relative to his FT shooting; but, thats about it.

WTF is wrong with being in Murphy's every night?  I did 6 nights steady for 2+ years, and 7 nights during finals.

I heard boos and was real disappointed. We have gotten tremendous effort from this team and its coach. Last night I thought a couple of the players were just worn down... and it showed. They happened to be guards and that really hurt us last night.

My son has never seen a game where that happened with our team and he was just shocked. He was even more shocked at the boo birds.

Let's move on. This critical behavior is self-destructive. I sure hope we did not have any recruits in the house last night.

As far as Dominic James receiving boos, I don't recall that.

I do recall Merritt getting booed by a bunch of no-nothings when he was a senior. They had no idea how important he was to this team the year before or that year. He was "a" man, not "the" man. The year before we had 5 men out there. When Wade and Rob Jackson left, they concentrated on Merritt much more. His spin move was something that brought most of the boos...but it was not a lack of effort situation....

DJ got boos for free throws and ill-advised 3's.  Merritt just had some people that didn't like him and booed him.  but nothing like last night.

DJ and Merritt got some wrath from certain fans. But its the same as Tuesday night, it wasn't from everybody but its enough to make an impression.

leever

Merritt was bboed because SOME felt that he did not live up to THEIR expectations.

Sound familiar?

I hope he did.   I turned off the game with about 5 minutes left not because we were losing (we were) or that I was disappointed with our play (I was extremely).   I turned off the game because I was disgusted and embarrassed with our fans.    Pathetic.    Every single person there booing should give up their tickets.   I lived through bad basketball.  84-88.   I was at every home game that I occurred while I was on campus.   I never booed.    I cursed all of the way back to campus, but they were my team and my classmates and I would never boo a classmate.     Maybe it is a generational thing.

You got nothing on my bad years, 87-91 which included all 3 of the Dukiet reign. At least we had Tony Smith to enjoy.

I was at the game sitting in front of a booer spewing profanities in my kid's ear (have a little respect please; what a jerk). He is an awful fan but I think people at the game that were booing were sending the boos in the direction of Buzz, not necessarily the players (other than maybe DB a couple times after some awful passes).

I'm not supporting the booing at all, and I'm still fully behind Buzz at this point. But I do admit I'm getting a little frustrated with this team, our defense, and our rebounding. I certainly hope it turns around soon. Still doesn't justify the bo birds.

tower912

We won the rebounding the last two games.   Just couldn't secure the crucial ones.

?-( :-[ :'(St. John's used to be a laughing stock in the BE, now they have passed us on the way to the top. WHY!!! Their next year's class is rated vy.high

The nine freshmen they got are much higher rated than the nine seniors that they're losing were.  BUT.. they will be freshmen and they will have a ton of growing pains.  There is no way that we will lose to them in New York next year.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

This is a completely stupid idea...  the officials get off the floor way too quickly!
