Dr. Blackheart

I (and whoever wants to add) will update reports to our Holiday Tournament like I did from Orlando last year for those unable to attend.  I have arrived and am checked in to the hotel in KC.  It is a balmy 72 degrees.  The MU agenda is as follows:

  • Today:  Greet the Team--meet first at Johnny's Tavern and walk over to the College Basketball Experience to greet the players and inductees as they arrive on the red parpet for the CBE Inductee Event. Will cheer on Tex but boo Chrissie Laettner.  Wonder if a traffic cop blows his whistle if we'll see a Duke flop?
  • Monday:  Pre-game at Johnny's and then apply some whoop ass to Duke.
  • Tuesday:  Brunch with Cottingham where he hits me up for some Benjamins I am assuming. Rinse and repeat to KSU or GU

Some quick hitters...

  • 10th year of this tournament.  MU and Duke only two of three teams asked back
  • MU only team of the four finalists NOT picked to win their conference
  • DJ's career best 25 points (with 7 assits and 3 rebounds) is rated the 5th Best Individual Performances in the ten years.
  • David Thompson, who prevented Mu from another NC, is also inducted along with Wayne Duke, Tom Jernstedt, Jerry West, Davey Whitney and Sidney Wicks...in additon to Tex and Chrissy

Let's hope MU gets this....

We're also in KC.. What time is the johnny's tavern meet and then player greet?  What are the details for the brunch?

5PM today at Johnnies....4:30 tomorrow.

Brunch is 10AM Tuesday but invite says "Private"...assume it is for season ticket holders/B&G donors.  Mark Wright is arranging if you track him down.

Pat, if Cottingham is smart, he'll hit you up for a lot more than just some Benjamins.

Quad...will sign ya up for 10 bills and the T Cubed bronzed bust.

Nice turnout (about 40) for the KC Alum's welcome event at Johnnies.  Good people.  Saw the the Dookies, Purple Haze and Warriors debus into the CBE for the induction.  Buzz and the Mrs. looking their finest.  MU fans were the only ones there...players looked a little surprised but appreciated.  Joe looked like he was bending his knee pretty well.  Didn't notice Gardner because of the rush.

Some pix of the area attached...Sprint Center, CBE, Power & Light District.

Saw a lady with a cane in the hotel lobby.  She saw my shirt, stopped me and started serenading me with MU-Rah-Rah.  Introduced me to her son.  Told me stories about meeting her husband at MU.  Has a picture with her family at Al and Pat McGuire during NC run in 1977.  Lives in Arkansas and up for the game.  Priceless...where are the rest of you candy-asses?   ;D

Off to the CBE.  Will post some pix later.

At the Westin Crown Center and I will be at Johnny's this afternoon with the wife.

Some CBE pix....lots of MU and Duke fans out...First up, MU in the House, led by our very own, Tall Titan.  Assume he paid the same as he does every game for the Palermo's pizza prize.

Didn't check the bibliography...but I assume it was at the CBE as it opened in the Fall of 2007.  Lots of period pieces from then.

Oh well, at least the good Doctor has one size still in common with Shaq

Henry, you have heard of this theorem:  The size of your drink is directly proportionate to the size of your Lil Shaq.  I am drinking a double pint, btw.   ;)

One interesting note I thought I would share from the visit today...was the one inductee that I had heard about but was surprised that he was a member of the Hall...and that is Travis Grant.  I never remembered him being college basketball's all time leader scorer with 4,045 points at Kentucky State.  A great NYT article here:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/22/sports/ncaabasketball/22grant.html

Related to Grant's story was a film they were showing on how college basketball smashed segregation.  We have all seen "Glory Road", but the story was way before then and lasted way after.  One point that stood out was how African American players like Russell at USF, Chamberlain at KU, Baylor at Seattle, etc. really took the game "above the rim" in the 1950's, changing it completely--not just for the style of play but by dominating and helping crash the walls of segregation via play on the floor. Don Chaney, Big House Gaines and on and on.  Has taken too long.

On to the festivities...lots of Dookies streaming in in their Mercedes...KSU Wildcats in their tractors.  Nothing to lose, everything to gain for the Warriors!

A few pix from the game.  Tough loss, great crowd.  KSU fans out en masse.  They were very impressed with Butler.  Duke fans respectful after of our grit.  I thought the difference was the transitional game...got killed on the long breaks off the missed threes for fast breaks.  KSU fans really want to play Duke.  I think we can take the Zags.

Dr. Blackheart, how did you fare in the CBE pop-a-shot, 3-point, & free throw shooting contests?? seriously, my arms are sore from "playing" all that bball.  Wish i'd known about that place before i showed up in my skinny jeans.... i mean, where was the locker room??? haha.

Secondly, johnny's tavern was insane.  I wish i had known more people there!  How many Scoopers attended??
