Was fun to be in the top 5.  Looking at what baylor and wvu have been getting, it may just take one deep run my mu to get a couple of these top big men to land at mu.  They are already considering us, which is a good start.

mikem91288

Those two can suck it. Quincy got on ESPN and said he was "taking his talents" to Baylor. Sorry man you are not Lebron.

I'm sure there are good reasons for going to college in the middle of a steer ranch.

I just can't think of any right now.

Either Drew is one hell of a salesman, or there is some shady business going down in Waco.  The most memorable moment of Baylor basketball is when one teammate killed another teammate, and the head coach tried to cover the whole thing up.  Now all of a sudden 5 star recruits are tripping over themselves trying to play for Baylor...something is rotten in the state of Denmark my friend....

The NCAA has been sniffing around Waco for the past few months. If they weren't such an inept organization, I'd expect them to find something.

I guess that the excuse frequently offerred that MU has difficulty recruiting because it is urban and in Milwaukee has been diluted even further. recruits go to schools for all kinds of reasons, and we should not offer up that Milwaukee is difficult to recruit to.
I thought you were dead. Willie lives rent free in Reekers mind. Rick Pitino: "You can either complain or adapt."

Miller and Bello played AAU basketball for D-One Sports, which was founded by Brian Clifton. Brian's younger brother, Dwon Clifton, was hired to the Baylor coaching staff in 2008. At that point, the Bears were recruiting John Wall out of Raleigh (N.C.) Word of God.-from -http://www.zagsblog.com/
Hopefully I cited this correctly, so the police do not show up at my office for theft...ooops, piracy

Very good find...and proper citation to avoid theft charges.  I believe it was in 2008 or 2009 where the NCAA put in a rule that tried to prevent schools from hiring coaches who could "influence" players to a particular school?  Kind of a hard thing to enforce...Could BMA or some other guru corroborate this new rule?  It very well may have been put in afer 2008..

I think the rule is you can't hire the coach of a recruit, but there's nothing about hiring the brother of a coach of a recruit.

I don't think that the problem is the NCAA's ineptitude... the problem is that there are all sorts of overpowering odors in Waco.  Not even a bloodhound could navigate through that kind of funk.

Dwon Clifton no longer coaches at Baylor...I believe he is either back working with D-One Sports or is one of John Wall's marketing reps...not sure.

Regarding the hiring of someone close to a recruit. You can hire anyone you want to a "non-staff" position (Director of Basketball Ops, Coordinator of Laundry Ops, etc) but if you do, you cannot recruit anyone associated with that person for (I think) 3 years prior to you hiring and 3 years after he leaves your program.

Now...You can hire anyone you want as an assistant coach, and sign a player that is associated with him. However...you are only allowed 3 real assistant coaches, so do you want to waste one on a handler just to sign a player?

The 2nd situation had an impact on Keith DeWitt's recruitment, and (at least I beleve) it will have an impact on one of the players we are still recruting.

Of course if you go with that logic that Miller and Bello were only going to attend a school that does things on the shady side then .....  you get the idea.  That's the problem with that line of thinking.

It's a manpower issue not an issue of incompetence.  Very few enforcement agents, no subpoena power, over a 1000 schools to monitor in all divisions making up more than 200,000 athletes.

What player is MU recruiting that this could impact?

Maybe it's nothing, maybe it's something...but interesting nonetheless.

This is old news....there is stink all over the program in Waco...I've posted this several times in other threads about this recruitment.

Local HS coaches are concerned about the future of their players and are not happy with Drew's antics so many won't let their kids near Baylor right now. Fellow Big 12 coaches have been whispering about it for a while but the whispers are getting louder as the HS coaches are now also getting involved. Word spreading is that Drew is known to have "deep pockets" and also has adopted his version of Calimari's "one and done" approach in his pitch.

There's a lot of smoke swirling around the Baylor program but coaching friends tell me that there is also fire and that it's only a matter of time before the walls come tumbling down. Unlike UK, Baylor doesn't have the financial or political clout with the NCAA..add to that the fact that they are only a few years removed from a previous NCAA major sanction and ...you fill in the blanks....

UNC wanted nothing to do with Miller...didn't even try to recruit him..... and he went to school right down the road.....anything with the Clifton's name associated with it (like John Wall) has some "funk" as someone else described, coming with them as well. These guys with "handlers" are going to go to schools with slimy/shady coaches like Cal and Drew.....I said it yesterday but Waco and Baylor are a very odd choice for premier basketball talent without other less obvious rea$ons. I am not backing away from that position...I've been to Waco many times and even my Baylor alum friends/neighbors find this whole thing really puzzling.

Don't lose sleep on this one guys.....MU was never really in the hunt.....and he is not the type of character person that Buzz wants on the team.....very immature and all about himself.....Pitino walked out of one of his summer games after watching him showboat  and stopped recruiting him as well.....if Pitino didn't want him that should tell you something, especially with his already very thin roster.....he would have been cancer to our program......it would have been far worse than the Maymon situation in the long run.

Definitely not losing sleep over it, but I'm puzzled by your last paragraph.  If Buzz doesn't want this type of guy on the team, why were we recruiting him?  Why did we get added to his final 5 in the last month?

Vander ditched Bo Ryan and Badger fans to play for Buzz so he obviously has pretty good judgment. We all get fooled from time to time  ;D

Does the fact that a player is not being recruited by a school preclude that person from adding said school to his "list"?  Kevin Hart wasn't recruited by anyone, yet he faked an entire announcement.

Closer to home, a recent MU recruit had other schools "on his list" that were widely believed to have not even made an offer or even been recruiting the individual at all.

MU made Miller's final 5  -- so what?  I'm putting Marquette on my final 5 list right now... that doesn't mean Buzz has made me an offer.
