Would anybody be devastated or angry if he does not sign? Would we rather have a project big or another guard on a guard loaded team. I for one don't really mind if we let him go. He was not even in the highest division of hs basketball in his state.

Why is everybody so content to write him off?  I want Newbill at MU.

not playing in the highest division of hs ball in the state does not mean you can't be a high quality player.

Agreed. The more I read about him the more I like him. There was a recent article about him shooting 14 for his last 15 in all star games (yea defense may not be great but still) and how hard he is working on his shot. He said he will be here in July, I believe, to take some classes so I fully expect him to sign and am very happy that he is coming to MU.

Based off of what?  The youtube videos and few articles you have read?  Step off.  I trust Buzz and his team to evaluate players, you clearly do not.

I wouldn't be devastated or angry, but I most certainly would be disappointed.

I clicked on this thread excited and hoping that he had signed  this morning or something and then I read this crap.

I am excited for the kid to come to MU and from all accounts he is regarded as a top talent from Philly this year so welcome DJ.

Your post is an embarrasment to me, and I'm sure many other MU fans.  This post is an insult to the coaching staff, and to Newbill.  Lots of talent in Philadelphia, this opens up that pipeline, and Newbill has been outstanding.  He was at MU's Elite Camp last year, and gave Vander Blue a good run for his money.  Vander and Newbill will make each other better - and they are far different players - Vander a better athlete/transition player, Newbill a much better shooter, physical guard/defender.  Please do not make judgements about a player based on him NOT playing in the highest division of basketball in his state - that in NO way is a criteria to judge the caliber of player someone is.  Newbill will be an effective player for MU, and by all accounts has a great work ethic/attitude.

I, for one, am very high on MU's latest DJ.  He may begin his career as a role player (a shooter) but I think he could develop into something special.  He is a winner and a scorer.  If he buys into Buzz's system offensively and defensively, he will be very, very good, I am convinced.

To answer your question, I would be very disappointed if he did not sign.

These posts about Newbill are ridiculous, knock it off already.
I will take guys like DJ every day over some 6'10"+ stooge just because the lemmings on this board think, "we need a big."  He's a proven long-range shooter, big-game player (it doesn't really matter what LEVEL he played at in HS), and most importantly, WINNER.  I'm very excited about him in an MU uniform for the next 4 years.

Tell me who you feel has more expertise in player evaluation, you or Buzz and his staff?

Add me to the list that finds this type of a post reprehensible.   >:(

Three-point shooting is critical to this team and I think that Newbill will help in that regard. Both Cubillan and Acker improved their touch from three as seniors (maybe more accurate to say David rediscovered his) and losing three good shooters from distance will leave a void. If he can help fill it as a specialist early on, then develop into a more complete player as he goes forward, I see no reason we wouldn't want him.

Bottom line, it's all about having faith in Buzz. Last year, people thought we would suffer without Crean, yet Buzz had us ranked in the top ten in the country before the injury to James hamstrung our season (as Acker last year wasn't near as ready as he was this year), and this year he took a team that everyone said was undersized and kept them among the elite in the best conference in the country. He has found guys like Butler, DJO, and has had consecutive consensus top 25 recruiting classes, something that is not bad for essentially a rookie head coach. Buzz knows what he needs in a player, and based on the accolades Newbill has received, it sounds like he fits the bill.

Since he is in fact coming it doesn't really matter what the original poster thinks.

Whatever happened to the days when fans supported a kid once he verbaled to their school?  :-[

Buzz wanted him. MU was his first choice. By all accounts he is a good kid and a good student.

Time for the arm chair GM's to give it a rest and welcome the kid to MU.

We offerred and the kid committed, so he should be signed.

leading scorer in Philly area should help us at some point.

I have been criticized before for this statement, but I really believe by time he is done he will be a better player than Blue. So yes I would be very disappointed if he did not sign. This is not a player that committed two years ago and has not improved. This is a player that Buzz took a commitment from two months ago instead of holding the scholarship open for a potential bigman. That alone should tell you what Buzz thinks of him.

So you are all saying that if we could get Dieng, or Cothron you would rather have Newbill? I simply said a project big because it has been clear on this board that alot of people think all the bigs left in this year's class are projects.

This outcome would not surprise me..though it goes against popular opinion.  I believe both Blue and Newbill will have good careers at MU, and that at the end of their time, there may not be much of a disparity as to who the better player was - possibly a Wes and Jerel scenario, with Vander Blue being Jerel...and Newbill being Wes.

It is at least worth mentioning that he was a late verbal commit....and let's just say he wasn't juggling his options with UK, KU, UConn....etc. And it's not like Philly is the type of city where good ballers go unnoticed.... Buzz, all the way from Milwaukee, didnt uncover Philly's hidden gem so late in the recruiting process.
