Steve Rushin left SI...cancel my subcription!
« on: February 20, 2007, 04:51:10 PM »
Not sure if this was posted yet.  From Bob Wolfley's column this morning in JS.

Rushin dressing
Columnist Steve Rushin has left Sports Illustrated because the magazine wanted him to give up his column, according to the Web site thebiglead.com.

Rushin, 40, has been a columnist for the magazine since 1998. He is a graduate of Marquette University.

Usually, the first two pages I read when SI arrives are his colunmn and Rick Reilly.  Bummer!

I enjoy his writing, but I'm not sure that wasn't a good move by SI. My feeling is a column should be something to sell papers/magazines. His style is just a little too Prairie Home Companion for me. I think he'd be better off writing features, a la Gary Smith

He had become my first stop reading the magazine, because I find myself disagreeing with Rick Reilly more and more as I get older.  Too bad he's leaving.

Calvin:  Nobody thinks I'm a genius.

SI and Time Warner in general had massive layoffs and downsizing the last few weeks.  The paper world is coming to an end slowly but surely (newpapers, magazines, etc) and as a result many folks have lost their jobs on the paper side.

It's a digital world.

What I don't understand, in this case, is why Rushin wouldn't keep his job as an online columnist or other venue.  He is very talented which should mean he is scooped up soon...I hope.  Rumors are that he didn't want to write for the web and SI wanted him to, but I have no idea if it's true.

He was making close to a 1/2 million a year per one website...he's a great talent and I'm sure we will find him either at ESPN or elsewhere soon.  Some are predicting CBSsportsline.

Sorry Tony....it's been a slow day.  Waiting for some return calls and emails and until then I thought I would come over here.  It's strange, there are many people here with many more posts then I, ah but that wouldn't matter.

I also enjoyed reading his column.  I see his wife Rebecca Lobo doing lots of sideline reporting for ESPN and doing some broadcasting.  Something tells me they're not hurting for money right now and he'll find something else soon enough.

It really is sad.  Could not have said it any better.  I would take Murph instead any day.

What is more annoying, someone who responds (on topic) to several posts in one day or people who post just to take an opportunity (that really isn't there) to criticize someone?

I know my answer.

5 is more than a few....maybe it's the marketing in me...I consider it many.  I'm posting 3.4 times per day...a criminal act apparently.  But it is nice to read the attacking posts, they add a ton to the discussion from those that do.

It's a digital world.

It's not a paper/digital issue because, regardless of which media is being used more, there will always be a market for content, and therefore always a market for those who can produce and edit content. Content is content, whether it's online or on paper.

Very true on content argument but the digital issue is still relevant.  If a writer is only willing to write on one source (i.e. paper only), then that limits content for his publisher in other space (online, etc).  If the rumors are true per that website, then the availability of that content in other areas (much cheaper areas I might add) is a problem.

As we move more and more to the digital world and paper becomes obsolete, the content has to move with them to that digital world.  If the content (aka the talent in this case) is unwilling......

I was a classmate of Steve's.  I worked with him at WMUR and played hoops with him a couple of times.   I wish him nothing but the best.
Luke 6:45   ...A good man produces goodness from the good in his heart; an evil man produces evil out of his store of evil.   Each man speaks from his heart's abundance...
