Wow, I woulda bet serious money that Cadougan would be cleared well before Mbao.

TJ

Before Junior?  That's surprising.

Either way, this is great news.  Get him in and working with the trainers right away!

No kidding.  I wonder if this means that Cadougan's Clearninghouse clearance is going poorly?

Mbao cleared

Just spoke to coach Buzz Williams, who informed me that he just received word that freshman center Youssoupha Mbao has been ruled eligible by the NCAA Clearinghouse for the upcoming fall semester.

I'll have more on this in a bit.

Which makes no sense given that Junior spent his entire high school career in the US and Mbao has only been here for one year.

Gotta wonder if Christian Life is under the microscope.

While I hate to be a debbie downer, I wish it were Junior who received the early waiver...oh well, glad to see that at least there's some movement for our guys getting cleared!

Maybe.  But Mbao went to Stoneridge Prep which is already one of the schools that the NCAA has identified as having issues, and they definitely look closely at all their students.

Does it matter who gets cleared first?  Junior still has a few weeks before classes.  I take this as a sign that the NCAA is working on winter sports recruits.

+1,  i was expectin a lot more Woo Hoo's and Hi-fives in this thread, you people are being bummers.

ZiggysFryBoy

Clearly, Mboa comes before Cadugan in the NCAA alphabetical order.

I'm excited to read Todd's open gym reports on Mbao and Otule!!!

hdog1017

Great news about Mbao.  Hopefully he's been introduced to Marquette Gyros.

I think you'll now have to wait until next summer for open gym reports... ;)

I believe that he still has to be cleared by the Amateurism Committee...or whatever it's called.

Just wanted to let you all know that I am the one to blame for Cadougan's Clearninghouse clearance being held up.

Mbao cleared

Youssoupha Mbao was ruled academically eligible by the NCAA Clearinghouse for the upcoming fall semester on Friday afternoon, ending a nearly two-month process that ultimately kept the freshman center off the MU campus this summer.

"It's something that we've touched on every day," said coach Buzz Williams. "(Associate Athletics Director/Compliance) Danielle Josetti has been absolutely stellar in her daily consistency with the Clearinghouse. We're extremely excited."

Mbao, a 7-foot-2, 215-pounder from Dakar, Senegal, orally committed to the Golden Eagles on April 27. Mbao's journey began in his native Senegal, then took him to Spain before finally ending at Stoneridge Prep in Tarzana, Calif. in June, when he graduated.

But he's now clear to start working with the team and working on with strength and conditioning coach, right?  Even if he gets suspended for the early part of the year, it will be a great help if he can get stronger and get used to his team mates.

Believe you are correct.

I wonder how long this sitting out is, and kind of wonder what the reasoning behind it is.  Are we talking four games or ten?  And either way, what exactly is the point of penalizing a kid for playing overseas if he's eligible?  I don't understand the whole "penalty" aspect; I would think you're either in the clear or you're not...he's got to sit out games because he played on a team that had paid players when he was 16/17?  Just seems like a stupid rule.  Still better than being ineligible or sitting out a full semester, but I'm confused as to what the purpose for the penalty is in the first place.

I'm also wondering about the whole clearinghouse issues that Yous is cleared and it looks like we should know about Cadougan soon, but it literally took months longer for Lazar and Mbakwe.  Did the clearinghouse change their processes or get more people to help with the process or did all the effort Buzz described taking place by the MU staff not take place in past years?

GOMU1104

Lucca Staiger had to sit out an entire year at Iowa State, after the NCAA Amateurism Certification Program determined that he played on a professional team in Germany, while he was in HS. Staiger wasnt paid, but TWO players on the team were. He was found ineligible.
