I'm with you on the T-Shirts. Just wear a Marquette shirt and leave it at that.

More things I hate:

Lame t-shirts that try to be funny, but are not. Catholics vs. Convicts is funny, ND is a bitch, Ann Arbor is a whore is not, Brett Favre swallows, etc are not funny.

Signs at sporting events. Especially, signs at sporting events that try to be funny and witty, but are not.

mu03eng

first off you can't spell class without ass, and I am both :)

Second, if you can't trash talk and take the gloves off during sporting events then I don't know where you can.  Obviously, there has to be a limit but I have trouble drawing the at something like that.....maybe its cause I'm not Catholic.  All joking aside should nobody be allowed to wear shirts or signs that tweak people or teams?  Just curious what your line is since this tshirt is out for you.

Also general question, for those Anchorman fans, which is worse...."Notre Dame is french for our bitch", or "Notre Dame is german for a whale's va$%^#"?  Just curious might need to go t-shirt making?

A lot of you are listing off college bball teams you hate, but are forgetting a key team...flippin' Cincey!!

Our basketball rivals and teams I absolutely despise in almost every aspect:

1) UW
2-4) ND, Louisville, Cincey (take your pick on the order
5) DuhPaul
6) Pitt
7) Duke, just cuz they're Duke and the only reason to ever cheer for them is if it helps us

This list will probly get adjusted from year to year depending on how the teams are doing...Pitt will probly go up after a few yrs, i can feel the tension btwn us and them just building like crazy now (plus their fans are pompus @sses who think they're by far the best in the conference)....just cuz Cincinatti sucks so much this year, doesn't mean i hate them any less!!

The "our bitch" is definitely more offensive (and much less funny even if it weren't offensive) because it's closer to the actual translation.

The whale's va$%^#" is so ridiculous that it's funny (the fact that it's a line from anchorman makes it funnier too.)

muwarrior87

there is definitely a line between being funny and being just plain rude and vile and you have to get as close to it as you can without going over sometimes when it comes to signs, shirts, chants, w/e...a huge part of any sport is the psychological edge one team has over another and fans are suppose to assist their team in getting that edge as much as possible.

also, the ND is German for a whale's va#*@...great idea!!!

Absolutely, you can and should talk trash.  I was (and am) a trash talker and I encourage it - particularly for current students, but really for anyone.  I like a lot - probably most - of the t-shirts that are designed to tweak people or teams.  I used to have one of the original Catholics versus Convicts shirts (from the day when that was consided offensive by some), and I even like the shirts with the No. 1 on the front on the middle finger on the back.  In short, this shirt is my line.  You're not a Catholic, so you might not appreciate the adoration of "Our Lady" among many Catholics.  I know that it's the school name, but the play on words is offensive to me.  And honestly, I'm really not one that is easily offended.

As long as we're listing things we hate in sports, here's my list.

1-91.  The Yankees, Derek Jeter, Paul O'Neill, Don Mattingly, Tino Martinez, "Genius" Joe Torre, etc.  If they played the Taliban in a baseball game, I don't know who I would root for.

92.  Any "sport" where the winner is not decided by a tangible scoreboard or a clock.  Any competition where a judge watches and says, "Uh, that guy (or girl) won," IS NOT A SPORT.  That includes figure skating, gymnastics, cheerleading, boxing (unless the winner wins by KO), freestyle skiing, etc.  The competitors may be athletes, but that doesn't make it a sport.  Bowling and chess more closely fit the definition of sport to me.

93.  Duke

94.  Dick Vitale talking about Duke.

95.  X Games sports fo the Winter Olympics made up just so the USA can get a medal or two.

96.  Soccer in all its forms.  My kid loved soccer, to, when he was 5.  Once he was old enough to master th American sports, it was see you later.

97.  College coaches who moan about not giving the African American kid a fair deal and then recruit four kids from overseas.

98.  Brett Favre and Roger Clemens and their annual "Pay attention to me, I might retire!" scams.  Inceidentally Favre hasn't been above average in about 5 years and Clemens started taking steroids they day after he left the Red Sox.  Look at his baseball card and it is obvious.

99.  Terrell Owens, Randy Moss, Keyshawn Johnson and all WR in general, with the exception of Marvin Harrison, Wayne Chrebet and whoever currently happens to be catching balls for the Jets.

100.  Barry Bonds.  I should also hate Mark McGwire, Rafael Palmeiro and Sammy Sosa, but other than their cheating they seem to be decent human beings, and Palmeiro has one of the best porn mustaches going.

Can I submit Chris Berman? The fact that ESPN still rolls his tired act out there, let alone for marquee events is beyond perplexing. He was mildly amusing - 20 years ago!!!! and he hasn't updated his shtik since.

Oh yeah, and Thai food - more specifically people who eat it and claim to love it because the think it makes them hip/chic/interesting. Its not working dude! You convertable drivers know what I'm talking about. We're not admiring you when we look, we're mocking you.

Last year's T-shirts, "Notre Dame is French for Our Bitch" were classic.  Right up there with "Ann Arbor is a Whore."  :D

I probably don't want to re-start this debate, but please keep in mind that many Catholics, including myself, find this t-shirt very, very offensive.  Ann Arbor is not a person -- at least as far as I know.  "Notre Dame" (actual translation:  "Our Lady") is an real person that a lot of people don't really like to hear referred to in that way.

I know, I know.  I should lighten up, it's only a basketball game, etc.  I'm just saying...

Just remember, the shirt is aimed at the school (which happens to be named Notre Dame), their students, and the fact that we've pretty much owned them the last five years, not at "Our Lady."

that t-shirt idea was actually mine, i had them printed up when i was a junior during the 2003/2004 season.  thank god we won that one at home.  there should be around 230 floating out there.

Yes, some people took offense to that and i did get some slaps on the hand.  mainly because i was working at the McCormick hall front desk at the time.  there would be a longer line to buy t-shirts than there would be to get into the dorm.  i see where some people get confused behind the meaning, but nothing is intended towards Mary the mother of Jesus.  instead it is directed towards the university.  the Jesuits found no humor in it, same as some people on this board, and they took it to the res hall directors since they heard them being sold in the dorms.  I got suspended from work, but it really didn't matter to me because i made enough off the t-shirts to more than cover what i would have made working in the dorms.

i will be doing another printing of them since many of my friends have sold their's off their back (literally) after games.  i was going to wait till next year when we play them again at home (hopefully) but if i get enough interest i can do an early run of them.

now let the debate continue over how not funny those shirts are and how big of an ass i am for making them.

Not sure where you are getting you Brett Favre information from. Over the past five seasons, he has been on average top 5 in the league in passing yds, top 10 in TD's with a  completion percentage over that period 61.4%. QB rating has been down the past couple seasons due in large part (not entirely) to playing on terrible teams. For the three season prior he had an avg. QB rating of 90 with the lowest of those years being 2002. You freely admitted you hated him, so I wouldn't expect you to let the facts get in the way of your assertion in a thread like this one. He's had a rough couple of years on some really bad teams, and he is slipping as he ages, but not above average for 5 years?

You are right about Clemens though

I hate Notre Dame.   I've always hated Notre Dame.  My hate grew exponentially once I began attending Marquette.  I'm a huge (HUGE!) fan of whomever Notre (F@#&-ing) Dame is playing at the moment.

There was a "Notre Who?" shirt that I admired.  But I'd kill (or at least commit a felony to attain a Notre Dame / French shirt.   ;)

All this talk of rights.  So little talk of responsibilities.

I feel I should jump in with things I hate.

The BCS - I can't figure out what the "C" stands for
Philadelphia Eagles fans - There's a reason they put jail cells in the Vet

Wow, I guess I don't hate much.

You may be right about Favre since I just about never see him play except in highlights.  I just get the distinct impression, and have had it for quite some time, that he is a lot more likely to throw a reckless interception in a big spot than a gutty touchdown pass.  I could be convinced otherwise.  Anyway, I don't hate him so much as a person or player as I do this annual "will he or won't he" retire business.

I agree with Berman and Vitale as those that should be hated.  Vitale b/c he doesn't do any preparation, he just talks about his love for certain coaches and Duke regardless of who is playing.  He talks less about the actual game he is talking about than any "analyst" working today.

As for Berman, he luvs himself so much that I just can't take it.  And ESPN plays himself up so much that I must admit to throwing up in my mouth when he was advertised as a featured attraction when ESPN visits Disneyworld.

Wow, being a Cubs and Packer fan, I guess I should tell my wife, when I die, buy the extra thick gravestone, because there could be several people dancing on my grave!

BTW, I am not admitting that I am or ever have been an ND football fan, but I did grow up an Irish Catholic in the Midwest.  I will say I am not a ND basketball fan.

pbiflyer

Our high school football coach was a ND alum. You either grew up loving or hating ND. I fell on the hating side. Every all american football player that we had ended up at ND, until Craig Ericson. John Carney, who holds the ND record for most game winning kicks went to my high school. It killed me having to hope that he did well. It was sweet revenge knowing that our coach had to cheer for Ericson to beat his beloved Irish.

Did not know about the MU ND rivalry until I got to Marquette. It was sweet my freshman year watching Doc hit that game winner. Still one of my all time favorite sporting moments.

My list of most hated:

1. Notre Who
2. University of Miami (you can't spell scum without UM!)
3. Satan
4. Osama Bin Laden
5. The plague
6. Death
7. Taxes

you get the idea

Stillawarrior, thanks for clearing that up.  I can see where your offensiveness comes from.  My trouble is how you get a feel for what is predominantely offensive.....ie if I were to drop the french part and say Notre Dame is our bitch is that less offensive.  Some people would be offended just by having bitch on something.  I never would have made the "our lady" connection until you said something.  Everybody can be offended by something, how do I judge that?

my list:
1) any and everything to do with notre dame, except for the small number of people i personally know who attend the school
2) catholics/midwesterners/hoosiers who feel a proclivity to cheer for Notre Dame just because of their religion or geographic location.

Next to Ivy League schools, Notre Dame is the biggest elitist school. For some reason they emit this aura that the blue collar worker seems to pull for them, and they have a wide inclusive fanbase, many of whom like them just because they're ND. In reality though they're the exact opposite, an exclusive school and community. An example of this is their football team, granted they have had a considerable amount of success, not so much recently, but that has to do with their inability to win a bowl game in over a decade. Back to the main point, their football team (due to spotlight and i would imagine many wealthy alums) are one of 4 independent teams in the nation (check that stat, i think the others are navy, army, and temple) and its all so they can have every single game on national tv with nbc and abc. The football team is just a microcosm of the schoolThey see themselves as better than everyone else and it disgusts me when there are ND fans who like them just because it seems natural

I was raised to hate Notre Dame, it is some times seriously a problem amongst my ND fan friends as we annoy each other.

Here is the other thing I don't get.....all the Irish-Americans seem to automatically get to be ND fans are for the most part are.....how does that work?

Just because I'm German doesn't mean I love beer....oh wait

But seriously, how is it that ND gets such an automatic fan base?  You don't see that in any other program where you could have zero connection to a program and just pretty much become a fan.  My cousin is half irish was raised in a blindly faithful UW family, grew up and lived his whole life in Janesville and yet is somehow one of the biggest ND fans I know.

I'm really surprised that the Cubs were high up on some people's lists for most hated teams, especially when they were listed higher than the Yankees. I'll admit that I'm a Cubs fan myself, but we've sucked for so long, what is there to hate? And don't say because we're overly optimistic because when we keep saying, "this year is our year," or, "next year its our year," its really just a joke. Plus your pretty cold hearted if you hate our goofy optimism.

I'll also admit that I grew up a Notre Dame fan, but I only follow them these days during football season. Being a proud Marquette student, I have grown to hate Notre Dame and my fanmanship has begun to dwindle heavily even in the fall. So basically, let's embarrass the hell out of them in the Joyce Center on the 24th!

Finally - How can you tell if someone is an ND grad? Because they'll tell you!---Its funny because they really are stuck up jerks.
