I think the Pat Hazel thread opened up an interesting discussion, about what is acceptable, and what is not for a player.  Obviously, schools set their own policies, and I hope Marquette continues to hold it's players responsible for their actions.

Without attaching names to acts, I think we could have decent discussion, about what types of behavior would/could get a player kicked off the Marquette basketball team.  And I think to keep this from getting locked or edited by the mods, please do not mention names of players, both past and present.  In my opinion, these types of indiscretions can be tiered.

The first tier, or the most forgiveable could include: Under age drinking at a party, verbal confrontations with other students or DPS, skipping a couple classes

Second Tier: Caught at a bar with a fake ID by police, minor fight with another student or player, skipping more than just a few classes

Third Tier: Stealing, cheating on a test, public intoxication, minor drug (marijuana) posession, too much gambling, DUI

Unforgiveable Tier: Date rape or female abuse, steroids or major drug infraction, betting on college basketball, getting paid by boosters, kidnapping your roommate and setting him on fire  ;)

These are just my opinions, and of course there are a lot of gray areas to many of these instances.  What are other peoples thoughts??

I think you first start with coaching staff. Knowingly violating an NCAA rule resulting in NCAA investigation or sanction should result in the firing of that coach. A coach committing a crime against a person should also result in the caoches firing and I am not talking buyouts.

public intoxication a third tier offense?  sounds a bit harsh.  think about it... how many MU students on the weekends could be busted for public intox?

I was thinking more of a public intoxication incident involving the police, where some kind of scene involving embarassment to the program...but your run of the mill PI, more like a first tier.

Good point

That's a great start to the list for Buzz's tiers.  Now let's consider Crean's tiers, which are a bit more nuanced.

IF PLAYER IS MINOR CONTRIBUTOR:

Unforgiveable = minor marijuana possession and everything above and below

IF PLAYER IS MAJOR CONTRIBUTOR:

Unforgiveable = Not naming Tom Crean your son's godparent

Also, what about crimes against animals?  Punching a horse?

Sorry, but DPS?  I guess I'm not hip, anyone care to give me a clue as to what that stands for?

For a free Gyro?  Without naming names I know someone who did that....

Blackhat

freshman year roommate did that.   Had to take alcohol abuse classes for like the next month...funniest thing.

I think the Unversity of Wisconsin Code of Conduct for Athletes is a good model to follow.

your "unforgivable" tier offense became a one-game suspension at Syracuse last season.

If you play for Huggins, that means you're a starter and NBA prospect.
I'm like a turtle, sometimes I get run over by a semi.

Mike Anderson at Mizzou suspended a player last season because he was arrested for failing to pay a three-year-old illegal U-turn ticket:

The game reported in this story was against a doormat, though.

Or waving a parrot?

4ever meant micro-waving a parrot, which does not mean flapping it back and forth ever so slightly. As I remember, the student who roasted a roommate's pet in that manner was not a player, but the son of a coach working west of here.

Didn't that coach go out of his way to show his gratitude to coeds for their support?

Unforgiveable Tier: Date rape or female abuse,
/quote]

Without naming any Names and to be PC --- IF the player is a homosexual it should be "date rape or female/male abuse"

no, actually, when it comes to 4ever, waving the parrot is something he excels at.  and he doesn't own a microwave.   :o

At least I'm not waving a hummingbird.

I think that kidnapping your roommate and setting him on fire, if he is a Viking or White Sox fan, is not only a non-list penalty, but should be encouraged.  There have been a lot of changes in the law, after all.  Packer fan makes it tier one.
